Yes, some people are going through some horrific times in Texas, right now. Fortunately, there are thousands stepping up and doing.
The Tweet about “toxic masculinity” was sarcasm. The threads related by Twitchy demonstrate how people, particularily females, view this sort of heroic behavior.

It’s stuff like this which confirms my belief that man is basically good.
Now, I don’t know the background of the people in the pics and vid. I know the guy at the top is a SWAT cop. One of the guys in the bottom pic is sporting the Stars and Bars, and the guy in the vid is a Black guy …….. all MEN, coming together for a common cause and a common purpose. As you can see in the pics, noone cares what color the people are saving people nor caring what color the people are being saved.
People, you need to contrast that to the lunacy which has recently happened in Charlottesville and Berkely. The media tries to portray those events as indictative of what is happening in our nation. Abhor the violence and hatred, and lift up the heroes demonstrating love and kindness to strangers!
This, my friends, is America! And, that, my friends, is Texas!

The trouble with appeasing dictators is that they then think they can get away with anything. The missile over Japan was a shot across our bow. Trump now is really on the hot seat. A missile towards Guam would have been an act of war against the US. This is essentially an act of war against one of our allies. Old rules of warfare are really not in play anymore. Since Trump is constantly under fire from the press, Kim must think he has a free hand. He’s testing our resolve. He assumes Trump will give him fair warning before doing something really serious. Trump may surprise him.

Our bottom floor was built hardened for a cat 5, and it's 9ft above MHW…..we're going to ride it out here……unless we panic!!

Lars, here’s what’s going on…..Irma has spun down to a very small eye…it’s only 25-30 miles across….smaller eye, spins faster, lower pressure
I am going out on a limb and say that it’ll head more west and reprise the mid-September 1979 cat-3 Frederic. We shall see. That means it’ll miss Lat and hit me ;p, though I am well inland. Nevertheless big hurricanes do lots of damage over a very wide area. Though I am well inland, Ivan damaged my old house (falling limbs).
That’s the double whammy….if it hooks more west…it’s going to loop out in the gulf

Frederic made the turn in the gulf then started moving almost due north and moved up Mobile Bay, turning more NNE and NE later. Before the storm, it was fairly warm for mid-September. Afterwards, it was fairly cool for a week or two. I want to say that Foley was hurt badly. Foley is much bigger now than it was back then.

Hmm, there is a cold front headed my way and there is a disturbance in the SW Gulf on the tail end of the last one. Rain is expected in the next 24 to 36 hours with a notable drop in temps. Position and timing of that will affect both tropical disturbances.
In weather, likes attract, so that cold front (it’s a trough really) will act as a magnet.
I remember back in ’74 and ’75, we were Hurrevac-ed from Whiting Field. The Air Force tells (or used to tell) everyone where to go for a Hurrevac. In ’74, they sent us to England AFB in Louisiana. The eye of the storm (I think it was Hurricane Carmen) came to within 60 miles of England AFB. In ’75, they sent us to Moody AFB in Georgia. There was a cold front just north of Whiting, and it was aligned perfectly with Moody. The hurricane (I think it was Hurricane Eloise) just followed the front up to Moody AFB.
Afterwards, we said, “If you want to know where these hurricanes are going, just find out where they are sending VT-6.”

The Friday surface depiction shows the front out to sea and two high pressure areas behind it. With any luck, Irma will follow the front to the NE–missing most of the East Coast.

That front stalled and turned into a stationary front right in the middle of Florida. Instead of diverting Irma, it will probably aim it right in the middle of Florida. So much for weather forecasts. I wish everyone luck who are in Irma’s path.

Remnants of Harvey spun up an EF1 and an EF2 tornado some 100 to 120 miles west of me. The areas affected were areas I am familiar with. Eoline, near Centerville in Bibb County has been hit a number of times within my lifetime. Reform, in Pickens County, and points north and east of there, have also been hit a number of times. No known deaths from these at this time but the EF2 did cause a number of injuries. The Bibb County storm tracked northeast into Tuscaloosa and Jefferson Counties, but it wasn’t on the ground at that point.

The NHC is driving us all nuts down here…. 4 days ago the believed their models and put it right on top of us…..now today, all their models have it going way east of us…

Idiots have moved landfall out 4 days now….four days ago if the front was going to put it on us…four days later, the front has time to get deeper, and it will move it further east

The cold front I mentioned passed through overnight. It is not, in all likelihood, going to crack 80 here today. Overnight lows are forecast to be in the low 50s. Where I am, it might get in the upper 40s, depending on the local dew point. Winds are fairly strong right now.
Timing and position of fronts, which as Jim mentioned are elongated areas of low pressure either at/near the surface or at altitude, affect tropical systems. They tend to go around the edges of ridges (high pressure) and toward areas of weaknesses in them (low pressure).

Yeah, it is looking like the cold front and its associated upper level low may pull Irma more north and make it pass somewhat more east right now. Okay, my westerly push forecast was wrong.
With hurricanes, there is no “right or wrong”, just misses and near misses. The track is turning north. But each day they move the turn a little more east. Hopefully by the time it makes landfall, it will be just a 1, or at worst a 2.
