Pain is one of the most important lessons any organism can experience, because it is a basic signal that a related activity threatens that creature with imminent demise. Our “lizard brain” was developed to identify pain, and avoid it. That is why spanking works.
Years ago I read a study on spanking written by a child behavioral psychologist who very clearly illustrated how important a tool pain is in behaviour modification. My brother was likely ADHD, and because my parents spanked him, he got over it and is now a very successful and productive member of society. My brother’s son has ADHD to this day (as an adult now), and I believe it is because my brother refused to spank him, opting for “time out” instead.
