Do Seasons Change? Snow Extent

We still hear about it.  The demise of the ski industry!!!  We won’t know what snow is anymore!!  Blah, blah, blah…..  They even give us a cool graph to scare children with …….

Of course, there’s only a few things wrong with this graph.  First and foremost, it’s just one season!  Secondly, it conflates very different ways in which the data was gathered.  Turns out, our climate satellites of the 60s were …. well, they didn’t exist, although some gathered information which could be used for cross purposes.  And, even the satellites of the 80s were archaic compared to today’s, as well as other tools employed in measuring such.  And, lastly, this doesn’t really tell us what has been happening lately.  Pretending that the 70s were the norm without any data to buttress that notion is sophistry.

Well, there’s also that pesky truth that we’re only measuring half the globe and then applying a global notion to the meaning.

So, let’s fix some of these short comings.  Let’s show what is happening in other seasons.  Let’s cut out some of the older data and let’s look at some other seasons.

In lieu of running this down by exact date, I’ll just use the monthly totals.  So for Fall, I’ll use Oct-Dec, Winter Jan-Mar, and Fall Apr-Jun.  First let’s look at the fall data …….

Here’s the last 30 years.  Yes, we see a slight decline, but, not nearly as extreme as the top graph.

Here we see an almost equal incline in the trend.  Shocking, I know.

Source for the data is here.

Throughout the history of man, he’s been noting that we have seasonal changes.  Snow falls earlier or later during the course of a person’s lifetime.  Things change, and there’s nothing that is changing about that.

Consider all of the maddening predictions about the snow.  More snow, less, snow, blah, blah, blah.  Nothing is changing, just some seasonal fluctuations which has happened since the beginning of time.

April wine knew that, how come sciency folk don’t?  Seasons change gears and that’s forever …….

uh, are you trying to tell us winter is coming sooner?………..LOL

I have PROOF there is Global Warming! I have not seen an August snow storm in the last 30 years!

First and foremost, it’s just one season!

Yeah — and most places only get two of them for skiing.

Spring is a season many ski resorts need. And are losing.

  4. snow is same as rain; some years is less – other years floods, always was and always will be.
