Breitbart is reporting the Chicago Tribune and six other newspapers are dropping the AP news service.
Long-time Chicago media watcher Robert Feder says that switching to Reuters could save the Tribune as much as $5 million a year. …..
Chicago’s other major paper, the Sun-Times, is also having contraction pains. The more left-leaning paper has shuttered six of its suburban newsrooms in a cost savings effort. The Sun-Times is also attempting to reset its focus more on its digital products.
The AP, for the most part, quit being a news service, and has moved to interpret the news for you. Even the Chicago Tribune is forced to understand the quality of the product doesn’t justify the cost. The AP spins things beyond what is reasonable.
Today, we have two fine examples of their spin.
Here’s some headlines generated by AP stories……
Obama to fly to home early as ‘fiscal cliff’ looms
Obama cuts vacation short as ‘fiscal cliff’ looms – Yahoo! News
Obama cuts vacation short as ‘fiscal cliff’ looms
That’s great! Barry Zero, realizing that it was stupid to run off on vacation as the nation faces an economic crisis, cuts his vacation short to address the urgent needs of the nation!!! Right? No, of course that’s not what happened.
Before he departed for Hawaii, Obama told reporters he expected to be back in the capital the following week.
Barry Zero went to Hawaii with the full expectation of being back in Washington this week. He went on vacation knowing full well he had this issue to deal with. Why did the AP spin it like he was doing something magnanimous when it was his lack of seriousness that caused him to go to Hawaii in the first place?
Then there’s the crappy economic news from this holiday season. Here’s another AP story….
US retailers report weakest holiday sales since 2008
US holiday retail sales growth weakest since 2008 – Yahoo! News
And, there’s many, many more examples of these headlines. Okay, the headlines are pretty straightforward. But, it’s the story which has the spin this time.
Look at how they ordered the reasons for the lack of holiday spending….
Shoppers were buffeted this year by a string of events that made them less likely to spend: Superstorm Sandy and other bad weather, the distraction of the presidential election and grief about the massacre of schoolchildren in Newtown, Connecticut. The numbers also show how Washington’s current budget impasse is trickling down to Main Street and unsettling consumers. If Americans remain reluctant to spend, analysts say, economic growth could falter next year.
There’s so many things wrong with this paragraph, it’s hard to know where to start. First of all, all of the reasons given is simply opinionated speculation. This isn’t news, it’s an opinion piece! But, let’s look at the specifics…… Sandy and other bad weather? So, they’re trying to present the weather this fall as unusual? There hasn’t been, in my memory, a holiday season without some weather event at some location in the US. There is always somewhere where there is snow, or ice storms, or some other event. This year wasn’t any different than any other year. Then there’s the idiocy about the distraction presidential election which caused consumers to spend less? The damned thing was over Nov 9!. Spending doesn’t ramp up until weeks after that distraction!! Then the author babbles some inanity about the massacre of schoolchildren? How does that inhibit spending on children? If it had any effect on retail sales, (and it did) it would have increased retail sales, not decreased it. Then and only then did the story mention the budget impasse, as if the average American is paying attention to that.
Lastly, note the final sentence in the para…. “If Americans remain reluctant to spend, analysts say, economic growth could falter next year.” …. Economic growth in the US is expected to falter regardless of a shift in the attitude of the American consumer. They’re shifting the blame from the policy makers to the public. As if it’s our fault we have such a crappy economy.
Why is the AP being dropped? People don’t like to have smoke blown up their nether regions. Their product is crap and it’s overpriced. Good riddance. It’s demise can’t come soon enough.
along the same lines……but totally different

Lol, what’s she doing? Auditioning for Fox?
You could have knocked me over with a feather…
….I caught it when they played it again….on MSNBC!!
Surely she’ll be reprimanded for such an outburst!!
Didn’t know that AP was worse than Reuters. Probably Reuters is just cheaper and more anti semitic, therefore more acceptable to left wing newspapers.
Example:
2006: Reuters fotographer orchestrates rock throwing at Israeli vehicle
http://honestreporting.com/when-cameramen-attack-2/
Administrator W Geoff Beattie is on the board of GE.
Board member of Thomson Trusts is Crispin Tickell, the man who invented Global Warming and is to this day a barking mad Gaia believer.
Right, I wasn’t endorsing Reuters, the whole lot of them (news media people) are leftist ideologues.
As for AP / Reuters delivering the interpretation with the news: Their articles are designed to be reprinted verbatim in newspapers, and sorted from the core fact to the tangential so they can be snipped at any point, giving the impression you’re reading a complete story.
You often find in the international news sections of irrelevant small newspapers these AP or Reuters stories, when you later check them out on the internet you find the remainder that has been snipped by the newspaper because the needed word count was full.
Small newspapers don’t do anything with the AP / Reuters text but copy and paste them. AP / Reuters are PAID to deliver entire “stories” complete with interpretation, comment, whatever.
why do we need guns…

Editor sacked over ‘hoax’ photos
The Mirror board said Morgan would be stepping down immediately
Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan has been sacked after the newspaper conceded photos of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi were fake.
In a statement the Mirror said it had fallen victim to a “calculated and malicious hoax” and that it would be “inappropriate” for Morgan to continue.
The Queen’s Lancashire Regiment (QLR) said the Mirror had endangered British troops by running the pictures.
Roger Goodman, of the QLR, said the regiment now felt “vindicated”.
Mr Goodman added: “It is just a great pity it has taken so long… and that so much damage has been done in the meantime.”
The Daily Mirror… apologises unreservedly for publishing the pictures and deeply regrets the reputational damage done to the QLR and the Army in Iraq
At a news conference in Preston on Friday afternoon, the regiment demonstrated to reporters aspects of uniform and equipment which it said proved the photographs were fake.

It’s why the Brits don’t want that SOB back. I was reading something or watching something, I can’t recall specifically, but Morgan as editor quashed a story about hacking phones.
Great find, Kim.
Didn’t know he’s such a scumbag.
Thank you đŸ™‚
Then we have MSM preaching gun laws.
Only trouble is…He’s breaking gun laws just by possessing the Magazine.

Isn’t that delicious! đŸ™‚ Maybe we can get the Brits to take Gregory instead?
If convicted – I wonder if Sidwell Friends will be allowing his children to attend school?
The Gregory children go to school with the children of President Barack Obama, according to the Washington Post. That school is the co-ed Quaker school Sidwell Friends.

That would be even better. Get his kids kicked out of school to where they have to go to public school. Then we’ll see what he really thinks about arm guards at school.

(Newser) – NBC asked if David Gregory could hold a high-capacity magazine on Meet the Press Sunday, and police said no—but Gregory did it anyway, according to a police email. “NBC was informed that possession of a high capacity magazines is not permissible and their request was denied,” reads the email from Washington police to a group called Patriot Perspective, which had inquired whether Gregory would be charged with a crime. “This matter is currently being investigated.” DC prohibits such magazines, even when they aren’t attached to a firearm.
We’ll see if he actually gets charged or not.
Some stats:

Quote: Yes, you can look for trends, but the Centers for Disease Control already did that for you. During 2000-02, a CDC task force “conducted a systematic review of scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of firearms laws in preventing violence, including violent crimes, suicide, and unintentional injury.” Here was their conclusion.
“The Task Force found insufficient evidence to determine the effectiveness of any of the firearms
laws or combinations of laws reviewed on violent outcomes.”

Quote: the murder rate is historically low and is already trending downward. In fact, the murder rate in 2011 was the lowest since 1961: 4.7 murders per 100,000 people. In only 5 years since 1910 has it been lower: 1955-59, when it was only slightly lower at 4.5 or 4.6.
Quote: Today’s murder rate is essentially at a low point of the past century. The murder rate in 2011 was lower than it was in 1911.
And the trend is downward. Whatever we’ve been doing over the last 20-30 years seems to be working, more or less. The murder rate has been cut by more than half since 1980: from 10.7 to 4.7.
We can only speculate on what might be behind this trend, but I will point out a few interesting facts.
• From 1980 to 2000 our prison population more than quadrupled.
• From the 1980s to 2000, the number of prisoner executions more than quadrupled.
• From 1986 to 2006, the number of states adopting “shall issue” Concealed Carry permits nearly quadrupled.
