Shock News!!!! Global Warming Has Caused Exactly The Same Amount Of Global Sea Ice!

I was hoping to catch this.  Nut jobs.  Ohh!!!!  The horrors of global warming!!!  It causes us to have exactly the same amount of ice!!!!  Albedo deficit run amok!!!!!

    good catch!…I’m saving this one!

Oh noes! Global Sameness since 1979!

Human interference with the climate has destroyed its ability to change!

    We’re all doomed!

    So, by my model:

    0.00

Yep. We’ve found the proper metric for determining the budget needed to fight this atrocious threat to mankind. Time to publish.

  5. in other words: GLOBAL warming doesn’t exist – I’m correct and everybody else is wrong…!

Will be above average shortly and likely above average all September.

    • suyts says:

Welcome Alec, and yeh, the global average should be above the anomaly for a lot of this. I’m looking for a big increase in Novembers (maximum) global ice anomaly.

  8. robert says:

land ice causes sea level rise, you graphs are sea ice. what are your sources for the graphs. does nasa agree with these interpretations.

    • suyts says:

Heh, Robert, welcome. Sorry about the wait in moderation. You can freely comment now that you’ve been cleared. I’ll have your sources in a minute and a brief explanation as to what is being shown.

    • suyts says:

Robert, yes, these are sea ice graphs. Here’s the source. Sorry, I get complacent in thinking everyone knows the sources. …… http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/

As to whether or not NASA agrees, I’m not sure they’ve ever stated one way or the other. Which is okay, because I don’t think NASA is authoritative on sea ice. But, to the general question, do authoritative outfits, such as DMI or NSIDC, JAXA, and the rest agree with this? Yes, in general. They all have their little quarks in measuring, but, in general, yes.

Judging by your tone, I would assume you’re no fan of WUWT. However, if you go to his sea ice page, you can have access to just about all of the authoritative ice watchers out there. http://wattsupwiththat.com/reference-pages/sea-ice-page/

For sea ice watchers it’s really a go to page.

And, sorry, I wasn’t being clearer, I wasn’t referencing sea levels, but, rather albedo. But, if you do stick around, I’ll have some rather fun posts on the sea level, as well.

  9. robert says:

david, there are only a few thousand climate scientists globally. your 30,000 claim is nonsense. how many working climate scientists were in that group. every major science group on earth endorses agw, nasa, the world met, the csiro, the royal society. who are your endorsements?

    • suyts says:

Could you define what a climate scientist is?

    • philjourdan says:

Robert, “climate scientist” is not defined by any official agency. Anyone can call themselves that (look at Mann, Hansen, and Jones – none of which have any degrees in the area).

So yes, there are easily more than 30k climate scientists since the apparent criteria to define yourself as such is to proclaim yourself such. Just ask David Appell – he does exactly that.

  10. Philip Shehan says:

Take a closer look. You have your finger on the scales.

The baselines on the graphs are the 1979-2008 mean for each hemisphere.

The arctic shows a long term decline since 1979 so the mean line is approximately 0.8 million sq. km. below the 1979 level.

The antarctic ice coverage shows little or no long term rise, but a local (and like that at 2008-2009) possibly temporary rise for the last couple of years. The 1979-2008 baseline is at the 1979 level.

A fair comparison is the change since 1979 which is a loss of 1.95 million square miles for the arctic and a gain of 1.15 million for the antarctic.

  11. Philip Shehan says:

Then there is the fact that the greenland and antarctic ice sheets are both losing mass:

    http://www.sciencemag.org/content/338/6111/1183

    Abstract
We combined an ensemble of satellite altimetry, interferometry, and gravimetry data sets using common geographical regions, time intervals, and models of surface mass balance and glacial isostatic adjustment to estimate the mass balance of Earth’s polar ice sheets. We find that there is good agreement between different satellite methods—especially in Greenland and West Antarctica—and that combining satellite data sets leads to greater certainty. Between 1992 and 2011, the ice sheets of Greenland, East Antarctica, West Antarctica, and the Antarctic Peninsula changed in mass by –142 ± 49, +14 ± 43, –65 ± 26, and –20 ± 14 gigatonnes year−1, respectively. Since 1992, the polar ice sheets have contributed, on average, 0.59 ± 0.20 millimeter year−1 to the rate of global sea-level rise.

    • suyts says:

Philip, welcome. That’s a very interesting offering for a couple of reasons.
One, it’s fascinating to have people believe our satellites in 1992 could discern ice mass. But, two, you should read my post on this ….. https://suyts.wordpress.com/2013/08/21/did-anyone-notice-this/

What you might find curious, as I do, is that I referenced a NASA paper discussing the Antarctic ice loss which seems to contradict this. The relevant passage from the abstract …..

During 2003 to 2008, the mass gain of the Antarctic ice sheet from snow accumulation exceeded the mass loss from ice discharge by 49 Gtlyr (2.5% of input), as derived from ICESat laser measurements of elevation change. The net gain (86 Gtlyr) over the West Antarctic (WA) and East Antarctic ice sheets (W A and EA) is essentially unchanged from revised results for 1992 to 2001 from ERS radar altimetry.

The absolutely fascinating thing about all of that? Four of the authors in the paper you referenced are authors of the paper I referenced. And, they were written almost exactly the same time!
