Never pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel. —Mark Twain
Well, that is conventional wisdom, however, it was the media who picked the fight. And, now, they’re fighting someone with the bully pulpit. This ought to me interesting.
For those who don’t know, BuzzFeed posted a report/memo, whatever. It was supposedly an intelligence report. It was full of entirely unsubstantiated garbage about Donald Trump. News outlets such as CNN happily picked the stuff up and passed it along. The narrative of the garbage has already been de-bunked.
Essentially it said that Russia has been working on Trump to be an operative and had some horrible dirt on Trump. It even named people and places and events ….. blah, blah, blah. Sadly, no one bothered to check if any of the people and places and events ever actually happened. Nope. They didn’t. One guy was suppose to be in Prague doing stuff at a particular time. Instead of what was written in the memo, the guy was at USC with his son, and had never been to Prague.
That was last night/this morning. Today, Trump gave a press conference for the first time in quite a while. There was a series of speakers before Trump gave his conference …..
White House press secretary Sean Spicer shredding CNN and BuzzFeed for their inaccurate reporting of fake news. Spicer said:
Before we start, I want to bring your attention to a few points on the report that was published in BuzzFeed last night. It’s frankly outrageous and highly irresponsible for a left-wing blog that was openly hostile to the president-elect’s campaign to drop highly salacious and flat-out false information ……..
Spicer introduced Vice President-elect Mike Pence next, who also bashed the fake news from CNN and BuzzFeed. In his remarks, Pence said, “there’s been such a concerted effort by some in the mainstream media to delegitimize this election and to demean our incoming administration.”
You know, I have long been a supporter of a free and independent press and I always will be. But with freedom comes responsibility. And the irresponsible decision of a few news organizations to run with a false and unsubstantiated report, ………
And, then Trump took the stage ….
It’s very familiar territory, news conferences, because we used to give them on an almost daily basis. I think we probably maybe won the nomination because of news conferences and it’s good to be with you. We stopped giving them because we were getting quite a bit of inaccurate news, …….
….. As far as Buzzfeed, which is a failing pile of garbage, writing it, I think they’re going to suffer the consequence. They already are. And as far as CNN going out of their way to build it up — ….
An exchange of sorts took place, as well …..
CNN’s Jim Acosta then tried to interrupt the president, still refusing to apologize for his organization’s fake news reporting, by saying: “Since you’re attacking us, can you give us a question?”
As Acosta said “Mr. Trump,” the president-elect turned to another media figure in the room to take a question from them.
“Go ahead,” Trump said to the reporter a few rows deep.
Acosta, defiant, wouldn’t let it go.
“Mr. President-elect, since you are attacking our news organization…” he said.
“Not you,” Trump put down Acosta.
“Can you give us a chance?” Acosta shouted back.
“Your organization is terrible,” Trump fired another shot back at Acosta.
“You are attacking our news organization, can you give us a chance to ask a question, sir? Sir, can you…” Acosta piped up yet again.
“Quiet,” Trump silenced Acosta once more.
As the other reporter proceeded with her question, Acosta wouldn’t relent.
“He’s asking a question, don’t be rude. Don’t be rude,” Trump scolded Acosta, asking the CNN representative to be civil.
“Can you give us a question since you’re attacking us? Can you give us a question?” Acosta shouted, refusing to be civil in the press conference.
“Don’t be rude. No, I’m not going to give you a question. I’m not going to give you a question,” Trump replied. “You are fake news.”
Trump proceeded to take his question from the journalist a few rows deep and went on with the press conference.
A couple questions later, Trump turned to Breitbart News to allow this reporter to ask a question.
This is fantastic, especially given the fact that the LSM had asked people to stop using the term “fake news” ….. heh!
You see, the conservatives took the term and flipped it back to the organizations which are in the fake news business, such as Buzzfeed and CNN. Now, the LSM is regretting ever introducing the term “fake news”.
So, how can a president win against such a hostile media? Well, things have changed. I remember Bush having a very hard time against a hostile media. So much so, that he didn’t really fight back against any narrative. Why? Because no one was going to give him and his team any slack or tell their side. Bush Sr. lost an election because of the hostile media.
Today, though, things are a lot different, especially in light of the eight years of madness by the Obama administration. There are a plethora of news organizations eager to have the attention of the president which are not openly hostile to the president. Breitbart gets a question to ask, CNN does not.
Don’t get me wrong, the LSM will be seething from this. And, I anticipate that the attacks from some will intensify. But, if the new media performs properly, and does their job right, they’ll win. That is to say, they can’t simply be fan-bois of the president. They have to do real journalism, or they’ll only half win. Breitbart will probably only half-win, but, they’re too obsessed with their rising numbers to notice. Still there are other outlets and they will thrive, and grow and the LSM will continue to be less and less relevant.
Or, the LSM can take the admonishment, and correct some of their more egregious behavior. I think some will start trying to display some modicum of objectivity. But, most cannot. Mostly because the people they have working for them, from the lowliest to the most notable are too much vested in their ideology to even know how to pretend to being objective. And, so, most will simply go the way of BuzzFeed and HuffPo. Sure, they’ll still have their loyal readers, but, everyone will know they are not objective. The NY Times, WaPo, CNN, CBS, NBC, etc …… well, they have a choice, and they were informed of their choice, today.
