Our Douchebag President

Well, the thread of the last post is getting pretty long, so I thought I’d give the readers a new post have their rolling discussions on.   

Tonight is another primary night.  But, rather than focus on the Republican spectacle, I thought it might be more productive to highlight our total failure in picking our last president. 

After posing for a picture with an image of an international terrorist from a past generation, he gave about 50 seconds to babble about the more current terrorists, as he was watching a baseball game with a tyrannical despot. 

But, it gets worse ………

Usually, about this time, every four years, we hear the same refrain.  It goes something like this ……’It’s difficult to imagine the next president will be any worse’.  But, they do get worse ….. sort of.  I don’t know, it isn’t as if we have a straight line to hell.  But, the decline in quality people in the highest office seems pretty intuitive. 

It is, most likely, that my view is skewed. 

When I first became politically aware (which was very early in my childhood) Nixon was president.  At the time, I really didn’t understand what the fuss was about with Nixon.  He was simply doing what all adults already knew the people they elected were doing.  Even then, I thought, ‘if you knew they were crooks, and you elected them anyway, doesn’t that mean you support their crookedness?’.  Of course, I didn’t say that to any adult, or even ask about it during conversations adults were having.  I was raised, in such settings, that children were to be seen and not heard.

I can easily recall the Americans reaction to “Watergate” and the fall of the Nixon presidency.  We threw the bums out!!!!  Americans punished the Republican party and elected a Washington outsider!!!!!  We showed them a thing or two!!!!   We elected a man who was demonstrably and horribly out of his depth.  The fact that he was wrong about nearly everything he ever thought about and his lack of capacitance to rethink didn’t help, either. 

But, after Carter, and as a teenager and growing into adulthood, I had Ronald Reagan as president.  It was a fascinating thing to behold.  I recall the waning days of his presidency.  I remember knowing that we were losing a great president.  Even without regard to the term limits, though, I knew it was time for him to move on.  Time had taken it’s toll on the Great Communicator.  He was, after all, an old man.  But, it was an historic presidency.  At the time, though, I didn’t realize just how historic it was. 

I remember thinking about George Sr.  He couldn’t be all that bad.  After all, he was Ronnie’s VP for eight years!  At the time, I was naïve enough to have considered Bush as something of an understudy of Reagan’s.  It’s not that Bush Sr. was all that bad, he wasn’t.  But he certainly didn’t have the communication skills Reagan had.  We had, at the time, a minor recession, which would be a most natural occurrence after the great economic jolt we got from Reagan’s time in office.  The “definition” of what is a recession has changed a bit, so, in some considerations, it’s no longer an “official” recession, whatever that means. 

But, the American people had had enough of the Republicans after 12 years in the Oval Office.  Still, the distrust of a Washington insider caused us to elect another “outsider”, a leftarded philanderer, Billy Clinton.  His communication skills were better than Bush Sr.’s.  His execution of his ideas weren’t any better, but, that’s okay because his ideas weren’t any better than Bush’s.  I remember many of the foibles and BS which occurred during his two terms.  It’s a horrible shame to the American people that the most remarkable scandal attached to Clinton was his liaison with a young intern.  As it turns out, he was/is a sexual fiend and possibly a rapist.  But, “Travelgate” is a “word” no one uses anymore, nor, are they familiar with.  But, it certainly demonstrates his character.  At the time I wondered how the people who hated Nixon so much because of his lie would tolerate such a horrible person as Bill Clinton.  But, leftards never see it that way. 

Well, we all know the rest of the story with Bush Jr. and the absolute mess in the picture above.  I like Jr.  I’d love to sit and have a few beers with him.  I have often wondered how it would have been had 9/11 not happened.  But, 9/11 did happen.  And, an event such as 9/11 was inevitable.  Jr. made some very poor choices in the aftermath of 9/11.  Of course, hindsight is 20/20.  But, that’s why we have principles and convictions.  Is it ironic that the rhetoric behind consolidating so much power to the Administration was to prevent the terrorists from “winning” and changing our way of life?  I think Jr. gave up in his last two years, when we needed the most from him, he quit.  Did he not understand that the very powers he sought and obtained to keep us safe would then eventually be welded by a decidedly anti-American leftard?  Well, after quitting his last two years, the eventuality became an immediate reality. 

There was, and always has been a better way to keep us safe, while safeguarding our essential liberties and freedoms.  It’s hinted at in our Constitution.  Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.  The closer one gets to absolute power, the closer one gets to absolute corruption.  When we elect a corrupt SOB, to begin with, what is to be expected other than what we have today?  Today, firing people for political convenience is status quo.  Travelgate?  That’s amateur stuff!   Today, people get fired or kept depending on their loyalty to the party, rather than the people. 

It’s has gotten worse.  It’s gotten worse as time has become worse.  I truly believe that time as gotten worse, all across this world, in part, because we’ve (Americans) accepted worse. 

As Americans, we like to suppose our “leader” (head public servant) is the leader of the free world.  But, you can’t be the leader of the free world when we shrink from the world and freedom itself.  One isn’t a leader of anything when one isn’t true to ones convictions, or, if one doesn’t really have any convictions to begin with.  We can’t really help right the rest of the world as we work against “right”, here at home.
