December 15 Scripture Selection: Hosea 8-14
Food for Thought: Hos. 8:2-4, 7; 10:12, 13
Some people struggle so hard and get nowhere. Nothing seems to work out for them, and they cannot figure out why. The questions they must ask themselves are, “Have I really prayed about the decisions I have made first?” “Has the Lord directed me to take those steps, or have I been relying on my own way?” It just could be that the things they have been doing have been completely without the Lord’s consent or guidance.
But there is always a way to turn the ship around. Hosea 10:12-13 reveals how to do that. First, they must seek the Lord, falling unreservedly into the arms of Jesus and receiving His righteousness. Breaking up the hardened, stubborn ground of their hearts, and releasing the control to Him, they need to commit their lives to Him and all that He offers. Then they will reap the mercy that the Lord has ready to pour out on them. Even if they have dug themselves a hole so deep that it seems impossible to get out of it, the Lord, in His great mercy, will make a way.
If life for those people has been one hard knock after another, nothing ever going right, with constant darkness, confusion, and pain, that is a clue that they have been trying to make it on their own. Jesus never promised that we would always live on “easy street,” but we have His assurance in Proverbs 3:5-6 that if we trust in the Lord with all our hearts and do not lean on our own understanding, acknowledging Him in all our ways, then He will direct our paths. There will be no confusion about it (“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.” ((I Cor. 14:33)). Instead, there will be confidence, victory over the enemy, and peace. (See Rom. 8:28, 37; I Cor. 15:57.)
