December 13 Scripture Selection: Daniel 11-12

Food for Thought: Dan. 11:32; 12:1-3, 10

There’s an old saying, “Flattery will get you nowhere.” Well, for the evil one, in the last days it will gain him weak, wicked people who are easily influenced. No wonder Proverbs 20:19 warns us not to associate with flatterers. Unfortunately, the Bible says that there will even be people who depart from the faith, “giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,” “having their own conscience seared (I Tim. 4:1-3).” They will not understand the truth and will continue in their wickedness to even worse degrees than ever.

However, there are others who will never be named among such people. They are the ones who know their God. They are the wise, righteous ones who will not fall for the deceptive, slick words of the enemy. They remain strong, even under pressure, and carry out great exploits in the name of Jesus (Dan. 11:32). “Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever (Dan. 12:3).” Similarly, Proverbs 11:30 speaks of this kind of person: “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.”

The key is to know the one true God personally. To know Him is to love Him, and to love Him is to love His Word, Jesus, and live by it. Everyone who does that will not waiver and will not be deceived. “Purified, made white, refined (Dan. 12:10),” their names are written in the Lamb’s book of life, and they know it. Nothing could ever draw them away from the truth that they know, and flattery will have no affect on them because their purpose is to draw everyone’s sight to the glory of God and not their own.
