November 12 Scripture Selection: Jeremiah 51-52
Food for Thought: Jer. 51:6
Babylon is a metaphor for the world’s system that goes completely contrary to the Kingdom of God. It is materialistic, polytheistic, with its main priority being to seek self-gratification at any and all cost, and behind it all is Satan, the god of this world (II Cor. 4:4). I John 5:19 explains, “the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one” for whom the Bible warns eventually there will be a day judgment and of reckoning. But God’s grace is extended to all those who turn to Christ, choose life in Him, and get out from under Satan’s grip.
Nothing good can ever come from living according to the world’s system. That is why I John 2:15-16 tells us, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” And Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
The world offers things that may seem very appealing, but in the end are destructive. “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death (Prov. 14:12).” The only true way to have life and enjoy God’s blessings is to dwell in the Kingdom of God which is peace, joy and righteousness in the Holy Spirit (Rom. 14:17). Any other way will only bring regret.
