November 10 Scripture Selection: Jeremiah 47-48
Food for Thought: Jer. 48:26, 27
The Lord has held accountable every nation that has ever caused Israel harm, and He still does. Though Israel was paying the price for having rejected the guidance of the Lord, over and over God revealed His protective attitude towards the nation. And the fate of Moab, the historical name for a mountainous strip of land in Jordan found alongside much of the eastern shore of the Dead Sea, is just one of many examples.
The Moabites were descendants of Lot, Abraham’s cousin, and were a result of an incestuous act with his daughter. The people were polytheists and considered at the time powerful warriors for which they took great pride. Most severe of the complaints the Lord held against them was their ill-treatment of Israel and, in so doing, exalted themselves against the Lord, for to be against Israel is to be against God Himself, and that always will come with serious consequences.
More than ever before, the world’s actions are contrary to the well-being of Israel. The press is against Zion, the governments adopt policies detrimental to the Jewish people, and there are more and more anti-semitic assaults. Though there is little we can do in the natural about the behavior and attitudes of others, there is much we can do to show our support for Israel and our reverence to the Lord as Israel’s benefactor. We must pray for Israel and stand with the nation at every opportunity, even the most seemingly insignificant. Ask God to reveal ways to show support for Israel today.
