November 9 Scripture Selection: Jeremiah 45-46

Food for Thought: Jer. 45:1-5; 46:27, 28

The Lord, indeed, is a great comforter. He is most concerned with reassuring people who have experienced very stressful situations or are facing extreme conditions. Like any good, loving father, He does not want to see His children in anguish, so He sends His Word for reassurance and comfort.

Baruch had been instrumental in serving the Lord during some very unpleasant times for his people. Bravely, he was the one who took down the dictations of Jeremiah and delivered the ominous warnings to the king. Then he watched as things went from bad to worse and couldn’t help but feel heavy grief and sorrow for all that he had witnessed and for the hopelessness of it all. But then the Lord sent him a personal message! Though the Lord would not go back on His Word and change the conditions that Baruch found himself in, He gave him comfort in knowing that his life would be spared no matter where he went.

Notice, too, the reassuring words the Lord had for the refugees in Egypt. He was concerned with their emotional state, as well. Even though they did not deserve His mercy, the nation would be recipient of it, anyway. At the sight of all the violence and destruction, He told them not to fear or be dismayed. Though they would suffer the severe consequences of their actions, He let them know that He was with them and gave them hope for the future.

Anyone needing particular comfort today can go to the Lord and rest in Him. His Spirit is a comforter by His very presence (John 14:16), and He is faithful to send the right word at the right time. You can pour your heart out to Him, and He will listen (Jer. 29:12). We have, in addition, His promise that “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (Ps. 147:3).” He truly does care how we feel.
