November 4 Scripture Selection: Jeremiah 35-36

Food for Thought: Jer. 35

Tenacity is a very valuable character trait. The Rechabites remained faithful to their principals, even when they were taken by the prophet into the house of the Lord and offered bowls full of wine. Their father had given them specific instructions never to consume any wine, nor plant vineyards, nor build houses because he didn’t want his expatriated family to accept the conditions they were in. They firmly refused the offer. All of them.

The Lord’s point was if the family of Rechabites could adhere to the commandments of their earthly father, then surely it was within the capabilities of Judah to hear the voice of the Lord spoken to them day and night by the prophets and remain faithful to Him. The steadfast heart of the Rechabites paid off, and the Lord commended them and promised that there would always be someone from the family to stand before Him. Contrarily, the rest of Judah would face all the harsh consequences for having disregarded the word of the Lord.

The apostle Paul admonishes us in the name of the Lord, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God (Rom. 12:2).” The Rechabites refused to conform to their surroundings, despite the uncomfortable conditions they encountered for having adhered to their father’s instructions. They valued their father more than their own comfort and convenience. Today, there may be pressures to conform to the world’s ways to make it “easier” for ourselves. But the easy way ends up being the hard way. Would that the entire Body of Christ were made up of Rechabites.
