Turn Your Halloween Pumpkins Into Power

With the passing of Halloween, millions of pounds of pumpkins have turned from seasonal decorations to trash destined for landfills, adding to more than 254 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) produced in the United States every year. This Halloween, think of turning this seasonal waste into energy as a very important “trick” that can have a positive environmental and energy impact.

At landfills, MSW decomposes and eventually turns into methane—a harmful greenhouse gas that plays a part in climate change, with more than 20 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide (CO₂). However, when MSW is used to harness bioenergy—rather than simply being thrown away—the end result benefits the environment and helps our nation become less dependent on carbon-based fuel.  …….

So, the old use of the bioenergy will help us be less dependent on carbon-based fuel trick. 

I would go into the mundane about the 1/2 lives of methane vs CO2 and the absurd notion methane is somehow “20 times” the warming effect of zero.  But, there’s no point in all of that.  We’re talking about and trying to talk to people who believe bio-fuels aren’t carbon based.  What can you say to these people?  How can I dumb it down to where they can understand their error?

There are, of course, many other issues to write on this absurdity, but, again, what would be the point?  But, I will say this …… the pumpkin waste is best left to go back to the land.  It’s a natural cycle which we should not attempt to interfere with.  Ultimately, I don’t believe we can, because we cannot create nor destroy matter.  But, it’s still folly to attempt to.  Let the plant waste go back to the land to rejuvenate it.  It works better that way.
