October 29 Scripture Selection: Jeremiah 23-24
Food for Thought: Jer. 23:29
Remembering that our fight is “not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (Eph. 6:12),” Scriptures like Jeremiah 20:11 take on a deeper meaning for the Christian in faith. When facing oppression and difficult challenges, it is quite emboldening to declare such a scripture from the powerful Word of God and watch as the enemy shrinks and flees.
Another such scripture is Isaiah 54:17: “’No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me,’ Says the Lord.” Though the first part of the verse is familiar to most, the rest of it is just as valuable for an effective weapon. Every time there are unjust or threatening words spoken against God’s righteous and chosen people, they can condemn them (which renders them harmless) and declare instead positive words of faith to take their place. Notice that this is the HERITAGE of God’s people because He has made them righteous, as we know, by the blood of Jesus (II Cor. 5:21; Rom. 5:9). That is how we resist the devil and win (James 4:7; Rev. 12:11).
So many Christians fall victim to the attacks of the enemy because they do not use that which has been provided them at such a great cost. The Lord has not left us powerless in the face of the enemy, and He expects us not to just stand there and take abuse from him. God has given us His Word that is sharper than any two-edged sword (Heb. 4:12) and is like a fire and a hammer (Jer. 23:29) for the purpose of defeating the enemy. We have God’s guarantee that His Word is more than sufficient for us to gain the victory if we will just use it by faith.
