October 20 Scripture Selection: Jeremiah 5-6
Food for Thought: Jer. 6:16
Jesus Christ, the same, yesterday, today and forever (Heb. 13:8), has laid before us His Word to walk according to it. But some people, calling the plan of salvation and the Christian life old-fashioned and out of style, are looking for a “new” way, one that accommodates their fleshly desires and “justifies” them. So, believing themselves to be wiser than God, they amend the truth to meet their fancy and discard anything that the world would reject.
In Isaiah 55:9, the Lord dealt with that kind of erroneous thinking: “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Man cannot come up with a better way, and the Lord hasn’t changed His mind about the plan that He established through Jesus Christ. Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” God’s plan to redeem mankind is perfect and, therefore, needs no altering for a more modern way of life. He got it all right since before the beginning of time.
Contrarily, variant roads paved by man for his own convenience in the end are found to be not at all convenient because they lead to destruction (Mat. 7:13). Jesus tells us in His Word that He is the Way (John 14:6). We also know that He is the Word (John 1:1, 14), so as we submit to the Word, eyes fixed on Jesus, we are, indeed, walking in the Way that has been provided for us since the beginning. It’s a way that is tried and true and requires no diverting to an alternate path.
