October 14 Scripture Selection: Isaiah 55-57
Food for Thought: Is. 57:16-18
For the one who has fallen and feels he/she has gone too far to get back into God’s graces: God is not angry with you! Any wrath that He had, Jesus bore on His own body and in His soul when He died and descended to the pits of hell (Eph. 4:9; Ps. 16:10; Col. 2:12-15). All He has now is compassion and a desire to heal and restore you of all the harm backsliding has done to you and those who love you. You can be free from the bondages and return to the life the He gives through Jesus. His sacrifice is more than enough to cover any sin you ever committed, no matter how grievous or horrendous. You can come back to Him!
In the past (before Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection), the Lord had to handle rebellion and sin harshly because the Holy Spirit did not have free range in the people to help convince them of sin and guide them, nor had Jesus died for the sins of all mankind. But now, through Jesus, our relationship does not depend on our perfection, but on His mercy, as prophesied by Isaiah: “For this is like the waters of Noah to Me; for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah would no longer cover the earth, so have I sworn that I would not be angry with you, nor rebuke you (Is. 54:9).” No longer does the Lord react in wrath toward us, nor will He reject us.
The story of the Prodigal Son, told by Jesus Himself, gives all the evidence needed to convince you that the Father is not angry with you (Luke 15:11-32). Titus 3:5-7 explains that we are saved by His mercy and not our works, and that through Jesus we are heirs of the Father: “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” All He wants is for you to come home to Him so that He can restore you and dote on you all His love and the benefits of being home.
