October 1 Scripture Selection: Isaiah 16-18
Food for Thought: Is. 16:1-7
Proud people, those who will not heed warnings, eventually end up fallen and devastated. As Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” It’s not as if it pleases the Lord to see them suffer; He always sends out admonitions—many of them, and by many different means—and He urges them to listen.
Moab, like other nations, was urged to make changes for their own good. If not, their daughters would end up like “a wandering bird thrown out of the nest,” and their people would become destitute. Their pride would cause serious repercussions for themselves and their descendants. How true this is even today! When one choses to live in rebellion, it causes harm not only to oneself, but also is detrimental to the loved ones.
Now is the time to take note of the godly counsel and make decisions accordingly! I Peter 5:5-7 says, “… Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time…” James 4:10 has a similar message: “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
The Lord promises much better results as you humble yourself before Him, allowing Him to lead you, but they will not turn out well for the defiant rebellious. Those who reject Jesus as Lord and Savior, especially when they go before the One Who sits on the throne “judging and seeking justice and hastening righteousness (vs. 5),” will find that it would have been infinitely better to submit to the One Who loves them and has had only their best interest in mind all along as they experience first-hand the irreversible consequences for not having heeded the pleas of the the Lord and His people.
