September 8 Scripture Selection: Proverbs 19
Food for Thought: Prov. 19:21
Every day you make plans and decisions and try to do what is best. But have you prayed about it? Sometimes in your haste, or because it just seems to be right naturally, you may neglect to pray or check for confirmation in your spirit. And that could be a mistake.
Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” Further in Proverbs 16:1, 2, it adds, “The preparations of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirits.” Just because it seems to be the right, logical decision, it may not be, based on what the Lord can see about what lies ahead that you cannot.
Among the names given the Lord in Isaiah 9:6 is the name Counselor, and for good reason. Proverbs 3:32b says, “His secret counsel is with the upright.” By spending time with Him, asking Him for direction, and waiting for His guidance, you can avoid enormous missteps and all the inconveniences that go with it. In fact, most of the mistakes made—if not all of them—are because people do not stop to just ask God about it first.
The psalmist figured that out and declared confidently, “You will guide me with Your counsel (Ps. 73:24),” and you can make that confident declaration, too. Just remember to slow down, ask the Holy Spirit about it, and wait for an answer before taking a step. As you learn to depend on Him, seeking His guidance will become second nature, and the results will definitely be much better.
