September 7 Scripture Selection: Proverbs 18

Food for Thought: Prov. 18:1

A lion on the hunt uses the strategy of isolating the weakest before going in for the kill, and that is often a ploy that the devil uses on people (I Pet. 5:8). Through deception, bitterness, rejection, and the like, he causes people to separate themselves from the others, whether in the work place, in the family, or in the Church, and the results are always destructive.

People who do not see the value of the others or are dealing with painful heart issues have the tendency to withdraw themselves. They often don’t take correction well and don’t submit to authority. So it seems easier for them to break away, or they are sent away. What they do not realize is if they do not learn how to submit to others, they won’t make very good leaders, either, when they attempt endeavors which require the support of others. The “Lone Ranger” attitude is definitely not part of God’s plan. (See Eph. 6:5-9.)

This goes for the family, as well. The best way is for family members to appreciate each other, honor authority, and serve one another. Rebellion and self-centeredness are the elements that usually lead to the break-up of a family, when someone decides to go it on his/her own, and the consequences are disastrous. Ephesians 5:22-33;6:1-4 lays out an excellent directive for the family to function well and be a blessing to those within and without.

Worst of all is when a person decides that he/she does not need the other members of the Body of Christ, the Church, and goes off on his/her own. That is entirely contrary to God’s perfect plan. He says in His Word in Ephesians 5:18, 19, 21, “… but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, …submitting to one another in the fear of God.” In addition, there are plenty of scriptures that advise us to honor those in authority in our congregations. In a loving church, that provides a wonderful covering and support for all the members. Those who will not submit and serve the others miss out on the protective structure that the Lord has set up and also diminish their own potential to be useful to reach others for Christ.

And when we live by the Word, we will be a blessing to others, and others will be a blessing to us, which ultimately is the desire of God for our lives. His ways are always best, and they never involve the believer isolating himself.

  1. I like Prov.18:17In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right,
until someone comes forward and cross-examines.
