August 28 Scripture Selection: Proverb 8

Food for Thought: Prov. 8:17, 19, 35, 36

It seems like there are people who go out of their way to reject wise counsel and make wrong decisions, well aware that there could be adverse consequences. The Bible says that those who sin against wisdom wrong their own soul, and those who despise wisdom actually love death. Everyday, they push the limits right up to the death of a relationship, a reputation, finances, and health, many actually crossing the line and causing their own demise, all the while rejecting wisdom that is shouting to them. Since they don’t value their own soul, it is not a far fall for them. (See Prov. 10:23.)

But those who find and accept wisdom find life and obtain favor from the Lord. They are the ones who have come to the realization that their souls are of great value and that they need to devote them to their Maker and live. That is the fear of the Lord that brings the invaluable wisdom and shows us exactly how to live and avoid detrimental decisions. It is, indeed, more valuable than gold and benefits us in this life and leads us into the next (vs. 19).

One of the things that we as concerned on-lookers can do when we observe the self-destructive behavior of a friend or loved-one is to begin to pray that the blinders be removed, that their eyes be enlightened, and that they would begin to seek the true wisdom that comes from God (See II Cor. 4: 3, 4). The Word promises that if they will seek wisdom diligently, they will find it (vs. 17). That is why Jesus, Wisdom personified, assures in Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” It’s how we came into this new life and gained the utmost appreciation for it, and with our prayers, they will too.
