August 24 Scripture Selection: Proverbs 4
Food for Thought: Prov. 4:1
Good parents are the ones who desire the best for their children and devote their lives to training them to live by faith in God. They place a much higher value on teaching them God’s ways than loading them up with material things and leaving them to be influenced by the ways of the world. Their priority is to lead them into a relationship with their heavenly Father, which, of course, is God’s priority as well.
Jesus says in Matthew 19:14, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” Good parents lead their children to Jesus and are careful to never become an obstacle to them. The Bible admonishes parents in Ephesians 6:4, “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” This is not a one-time event; rather it is a life-time of investment in their lives. Proverbs 22:6 assures parents that if they faithfully and lovingly show their children the way to live, it will pay off as they reach adulthood (even if they stray for a while, as long as the parents do not give up) (Prov. 22:6), and great heartache will be avoided.
Though it is naturally much more advantageous to begin having a spiritual impact on the child even from the womb, parents can and should dedicate themselves to instill godly values and faith in him/her, regardless of the age of the child. It’s never too late to begin. Leave the regrets, if any, aside, and by faith lovingly show them the way to life in Christ. Lead by example and pray for them always. Then the Lord will take it from there. After all, He is their Father and He loves them very much.
