August 19 Scripture Selection: Psalm 147-148

Food for Thought: Ps. 147:3-9, 15-18; 148:1-12

Well, can you do that? Can you heal the brokenhearted, count and name the stars, sustain all creation, and work wonders with just your word? On our own, none of us can claim any of these achievements. Like Psalm 100:3 says, “Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.” Just realizing the greatness of God is more than reason to dedicate ourselves to praising and serving Him, our eyes focused on Him and not on ourselves. He is worthy.

In this humanistic world, man prefers to keep all attention on himself and his accomplishments, as if he can take the credit for them, and totally ignore or exclude the One Who truly is responsible for everything good that takes place. Second Timothy 3:1-5 accurately describes this self-absorbed condition of man that would be most evident in the last days: “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!”

Jesus says in John 15:5, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” When our attention is placed on Him and all He does, then the Lord actually leads us and performs great things in us for His glory and for the benefit of man. Then we can say like the apostle Paul says in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me.” It’s all about our perspective.
