I don’t have words, just outrage.
You know that racist flag? The one that supposedly honors history but actually spreads a pernicious myth? And is useful only to venal right-wing politicians who wish to exploit hatred by calling it heritage? It’s past time to pull it down.
Oh, wait. You thought I was referring to the Confederate flag. Actually, I’m talking about the POW/MIA flag.
I told the story in the first chapter of my 2014 book The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan: how Richard Nixon invented the cult of the “POW/MIA” in order to justify the carnage in Vietnam in a way that rendered the United States as its sole victim. …..
Well, I don’t have words, but, a commentator to the story does…..
Just another angry leftist eunuch. Any time the courage of real men is commorated it reminds him of his cowardice and inadequacy as a man….and there is nothing more important to a Progessive than his delicate self-esteem.
The POW/MIA flag is, indeed, a symbol. By now, if there were remaining POWs, they’re all most certainly dead by now. There are still many MIAs there, who are all most certainly dead by now. It is a symbol, but, it has absolutely nothing to do with race or racism.
What the banner is about is an affirmation of commitment. All wars produce people unaccounted for. It is our commitment that we won’t forget their commitment.
It is by the grace of God that my dad wasn’t one of the people represented by that banner.
