August 7 Scripture Selection: Psalm 123-124
Food for Thought: Ps. 124
Had it not been for the Lord, you and I would not be here today! Had it not been for Him, the enemy would have already swallowed us up. Though we may not have been aware of all His interventions, they were there in the toughest times of our lives, as they are for us daily. How many times has He removed the stumbling block, or covered the pit ahead of us, or stepped in to deal with a would-be attacker, or simply led us to take another route? How many times did He hold us up when there was no more strength in us?
He definitely aids us more often than we can count because His mercies are new every morning, something even Jeremiah, the “Weeping Prophet,” understood and wrote about in Lamentations 3:22-23 : “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” The Word also tells us that He always lives to make intercession for us (Heb. 7:25) and that He gives His angels charge over us to keep us in all our ways (Ps. 91:11).
We’ll never know on this side of heaven of all the times that He stepped in and saved us, but we can still acknowledge His goodness and thank Him. Let us thank the Lord today for rescuing us from the wrath of the enemy kindled against us, for saving us from the swollen, rushing waters that would have pulled us under, for freeing us from the gripping teeth of the predator and from the snare of the fowlers. “Our help is in the name of the Lord Who made heaven and earth (vs. 8).”
