July 15 Scripture Selection: Psalm 77-78

Food for Thought: Ps. 77:2

One of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to comfort us (John 14:16). The Father set it up this way because He is a loving Father and never wants to see His children distressed. However, some people in their grief refuse the Comforter because society tells them they need to grieve, or tells them they are not normal or caring unless they show distress over a situation, or they feel guilty if they don’t. But the Lord promises us “the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:7).”

All we have to do is receive His comfort by faith. Prayer and meditating on His Word helps us do that. In Isaiah 9:6, the Lord is referred to as “Counselor” and “Prince of Peace,” among other names. His names reveal His attributes and benefits for us, so we can know that if we call on our Counselor and Prince of Peace, He will come. II Corinthians 7:6 plainly declares that God comforts the downcast. Further, II Corinthians 1:3-5 reaffirms His ability and desire to comfort us:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.”

As we cast every care on the Lord, we give Him the opportunity to care for and comfort us. Then we enter into the rest that He desires for us so that we can be healed and strengthened, ready to go on living and serving the Lord fulfilled in the plan that He has for our lives. So, instead of rejecting the work of the Holy Spirit, readily allow Him to embrace you and comfort you.
