July 9 Scripture Selection: Psalm 65-66
Food for Thought: Ps. 66:16; 65:9-13
If we really want to be built up in our faith, thanksgiving to the Lord and recognizing His mighty works on our behalf must have a primordial part in our everyday lives. If not, we begin to take for granted the things He does for us and feel distant from Him. Colossians 2:6, 7 says, “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.” Abounding in our faith with thanksgiving helps us maintain our feeling of closeness to the Lord, which is what gives us confidence in our lives.
Some people, the ones who feel low in their faith, are the ones who may say, “Gosh, the Lord hasn’t done much for me lately. I can’t think of anything to give thanks for.” Well, Psalm 68:19 says that He daily loads us with benefits. It’s just a matter of paying attention. The psalmist gives us plenty of ideas of things to acknowledge that the Lord has done. For one, we can be grateful for the life-giving water that comes directly from the Lord. (When was the last time we gave thanks for water?! –and, yes, even in times of flooding we can be grateful that we have drinking water.) And because of the water that the Lord has provided, the pastures are lush and provide nutrients for the herds and flocks, and for us. It even is a way the Lord uses to clothe us. So all of us who have had water to drink today, food to eat, and are clothed can offer up thanks to the One responsible for providing them.
Just looking around, we can find lots to thank Him for—even the things which may seem small and insignificant. The Lord has used so many ways to bless us in the natural, physical realm. And how about what He has done for our soul? When we see His hand in all that we have and thank Him for it, then our perspective on life changes and our faith grows. Therefore, it is vital that we make it our habit to notice the goodness of the Lord, thank Him for it, and declare it to others.
