July 6 Scripture Selection: Psalm 59-60
Food for Thought: Ps. 60:4, 5
A banner is the representation of what you stand for and what you fight for. You pledge your allegiance to it. It distinguishes one side from the other in battle. Those for whom battle is made breathe a sigh of relief when they see the banner raised and waving at its posted place in assurance of peace and protection. It is also the symbol for people to follow when on the move. And when raised, it declares victory and claims possession of territory.
The Bible says that the Lord has given such a banner to us. In fact, He has given Himself as our banner. Moses refers to the Lord in Exodus 17:15 as “YHWH Nissi, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner.” Indeed, He is what we stand for, and by Whom we resist the enemy. With Him in us, the distinction between us and the world is very clear. His presence as our banner serves notice to the enemy that we belong to Him, and wherever we go, we claim territory in His name for the Kingdom of God. And looking to the Banner, there is a sense of peace and the promise of protection that rises in the hearts of all who follow it.
Praise God, we have been given such a Banner for us to follow today. The Lord Jesus is our Banner. As we go through our day, we display the Truth; we display Him. Further, looking toward the Banner, we can have confidence of our deliverance and protection and walk in complete peace as He leads us. “You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You,” promises Isaiah 26:3. And as the Banner is displayed in our lives, many will see it and desire to follow Him, too.
