June 24 Scripture Selection: Psalm 35-36

Food for Thought: Ps. 36:7-9

Jesus said in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” He could make that statement because the Fountain of life that the psalmist refers to in verse 9 is Jesus Christ, Himself (See Jer. 17:13). Anyone who is thirsty and dry in their soul just needs to come to Him. In fact, that is exactly what He pleaded with the people to do in John 7:37, 38:

“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

Jesus spoke personally to a woman about that precious, life-giving water and offered it to her. He said, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water (John 4:10).” Further in the conversation, comparing the natural water from the well from which she drew to His water, He said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

There are people who really believe that they have chosen the “right religion,” yet if they were honest with themselves they would have to admit that they are still thirsty. What they have doesn’t satisfy them in the deepest part of their being—perhaps only in their intellect. What they have is mere religion, not a relationship with the Fountain of life. The fact that they are still thirsty is evidence that they have not directly accessed the living water for Jesus said in John 6:35d, “…he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”

This type of believing in Him is not just acknowledging that Jesus was a true, historical figure. It is not even enough to give lip-service regarding Jesus dying on the cross. The right kind of believing in Him is the kind that puts all confidence in Him and all He did and will do for us—so much confidence that the person would forsake everything else and follow Him as his/her personal Lord and Savior. Once a person does that, there is no need to search further for the fountain of life. It is now located within, and he/she joins David in exclaiming, “How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.”
