June 23 Scripture Selection: Psalm 33-34

Food for Thought: Ps. 33:5; 18, 19

“The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord (vs. 5b).” Really? How could that be? If I turn on the news or even drive down the street, I might not draw that conclusion. That would be because my eyes are on temporary, earthly circumstances. But there is a much bigger picture that expresses the true, deeper reality: God is love, He is omnipresent, and He is greater than the most dire situation and the vilest of evils.

Where sin abounds, His grace abounds even more (See Rom. 5:20). God’s presence, and therefore His goodness, is available even to the farthest extremes of the world—the deepest, darkest jungle, the most punishing desert, the highest mountain, the lowest valley, and even to the most abyssal, cold, damp cave. Under the most oppressive conditions, whether inflicted by nature or man, He is there.

David knew this very well and wrote in Psalm 139:7-12

“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall fall on me,’ even the night shall be light about me; indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to You.”

Notice his complete confidence in the Lord even in the midst of harsh conditions, expressed in verse 10: “Even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.”

Jesus promises in His Word to be with us always (Mat. 28:20) and to never leave us nor forsake us (Heb. 13:5). So regardless of what you face today, be assured, God’s goodness is available for you. Just call on Him, and He will cause His goodness to work on your behalf.
