June 8 Scripture Selection: Psalm 3-4
Food for Thought: Ps. 3:1-6; 4:3
Let’s face it. There are times in life when it seems like the whole world is against us and that we are surrounded by the seething enemy who is just waiting for an opportunity to pounce. With the condition of the world as it is today, we should not be surprised by the throngs of opposition to righteousness.
Jesus Himself warns of such times in Matthew 10:21-26, saying, “And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake (vs. 22).” But He quickly adds, “But he who endures to the end will be saved,” and “Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.” Further, in John 16:33, He says, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” The enemy is already defeated!
With the assurance that the Greater One lives in us (I John 4:4), and we can put all our trust in Him and His Word. We have what it takes by His Spirit to persevere and win. All we need to do is continue declaring in faith God’s Word as David did so often. He said, “But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts up my head (3:3),” and “I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around (3:6).” This complete confidence in our relationship with the Lord can be summarized by David’s statement in chapter four, verse three: “But know that the Lord has set apart for Himself him who is godly; the Lord will hear when I call to Him.” No matter how many surround us with ominous threats, we can rest in the knowledge that our God is greater.
