“Moron” Terrorist’s Selfie Gets Base Destroyed

Common sense eludes many, apparently, including one terrorist who just couldn’t help but take a selfie, which ended up getting him and all his co-militants killed.

According to Air Force Gen. Hawk Carlisle, a USAF intelligence team with the 361st ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) Group in Hurlburt Field, FL, uncovered a meaty piece of intel during their routine sweeps of Islamic State-related social media accounts. Apparently someone took a selfie outside of a headquarters building and posted it online. Guess what happened next (you read the headline, right?).

As Gen. Carlisle explained to Defense Tech:

“The guys that were working down out of Hurlburt, they’re combing through social media and they see some moron standing at this command. And in some social media, open forum, bragging about the command and control capabilities for Daesh, ISIL. And these guys go: ‘We got an in.’ So they do some work, long story short, about 22 hours later through that very building, three JDAMs [Joint Direct Attack Munitions] take that entire building out.”

The USAF hasn’t released many other details and is specifically keeping the location of the former HQ under wraps. Bottom line, don’t post pictures of your secret base in public forums because someone with airstrike capabilities could be reading.

Single tear.

Are you sure it wasn’t a Sefi(r)e Missile?

Either this story is a cover for some other intelligence gathering, or this US General has just given away a vital military secret on how they were able to identify an important target.

      EXIF data stored in photo.
Guy forgot to switch off GPS. Well it would have saved him a lot of recharging and his life.

    • DirkH says:

Other possibility, identifying location by comparing background of photo with google streetview photos. Google does have streetview photos from Iraq.

Here, Google brags about how they photograph the National Museum of Iraq in 2011.

      • DirkH says:

Or this approach would work even without full google streetview coverage
…you identify landmarks, maybe ask a local from the Area, the West has plenty around and the services surely have databases of refugees and where they come from, and that way you can quickly narrow the search. Use photogrammetry to find out the exact spot or line of sight and approx distance from where it’s taken, use cartographic material to identify the possible target building.

Another thing. Cruise missiles use optical pattern recognition to navigate. So you need an up to date 3D geometrical model of how any area you wanna attack looks like RIGHT NOW or you can’t use them all that well. So that’s why you constantly photograph everything, not only from a satellite’s birds eye perspective; you wanna keep track of the changing landscape as new buildings are erected or are already shot to rubble.

So, how difficult is it to run this pattern recognition algo on any photo you get; to find all the possible positions that match a view found in the pattern.

Cruise missiles use 200 MHz 32 bit tech (20 year old tech), that’s about 2 USD’s worth of CPU core at current prices. So a modern superconfuser easily beats that by a factor of a million, or a billion, think a billion cruise missiles virtually flying around randomly through your world model until one gets a match.
