June 1 Scripture Selection: Job 25-27

Food for Thought: Job 25:4

Job’s friend Bildad enters the conversation and asks, “How then can man be righteous before God? Or how can he be pure who is born of a woman?” Actually, it is an important question that still comes up often today, even among Christians whose eyes are fixed on man’s deeds instead of on the gracious, loving Lord’s. When we look at all our faults and flaws, our own minds cannot comprehend how righteousness (purity and right-standing with our Holy Creator) could ever be possible for any of us “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23).”

Well, on our own and by our own works that would be entirely impossible. But there was one Man born of a woman (Gal. 4:4) Who was indeed without sin, sent to take on Himself the sins of all mankind (I Pet. 2:24; Heb. 10:12), thus freeing us to be made righteous, as II Corinthians 5:21 confirms: “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” Romans 5:15-19 explains this process beautifully:

“But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)

Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.”

Of course, Job and his friends were not privy to this information in those days, but we are! We have the benefit of the Word which relieves us from all guilt and brings us into a wonderful relationship with the Father. No looking back. No condemnation. Just a free gift that makes all things new.
