May 23 Scripture Selection: Esther 7-10

Food for Thought: Esth. 7:9, 10; 8:2, 15, 9:2-5 (review also 6:1-11)

Mordecai is a perfect example of how to respond to the enemy: ignore them, or resist their demands, and remain faithful to your principles. Then the Lord will take care of the rest to bring you victory over the enemy and honor you for your faithfulness.

Mordecai’s example also proves true the promise that Jesus gives in Matthew 6:3, 4, “But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.” Mordecai did a great deed by reporting the plot to assassinate the king conjured by two of the king’s eunuchs, thus saving the king’s life. At the time, no special attention was given to Mordecai for having done so, nor did he demand it. He just kept on quietly living in the same manner as always until the king later discovered that he had received no reward for it and immediately did something about it, rewarding him with great honors.

Later, the Lord made sure he was given a very prominent place of authority. The illustration presented in Matthew 25:23 mirrors Mordecai’s experience as Jesus quotes the master in a parable rewarding a faithful servant: “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.” This is His promise to us, as well, today. As we prove ourselves to be faithful with what the Lord has given us to do (in our home, work, church), He will lead us to higher things, which, as we see in the life of Mordecai, may come with greater responsibilities, but also greater privileges.
