May 21 Scripture Selection: Esther 1-3

Food for Thought: Esth. 3:1-4

Your principles based on your faith and the Word of God are much too valuable to relinquish under the pressure of mere men! Mordecai knew that and refused to bow to Haman, regardless of the cost. He would not cave; he would not bow, and because of his resolve, God used him for a great cause. I pray that every believer across the world be strengthened in his inner man and resolved to do the same. (“that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man (Eph. 3:16).”)

The apostle Paul is another excellent example of one who would not let go of the truth under the threats of ungodly men just to save his skin. In his second letter to Timothy, he writes, “At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them. But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen (II Tim. 4:16-18)!” The “easy” way out would have been for Paul to abandon his principals to avoid the beatings, imprisonment, public humiliation, and so on. But what he had—and what we have—is much too valuable to let go of!

When we put all our trust in the one true living God, then He will take care of us as we face unpleasant consequences for standing up for our faith. And, like in the situation of the Jews in those days, He makes all things work together for our good (Rom. 8:28). Hebrews 10:23 encourages us, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” Our relentless decision to hold fast to our faith and not bow to the worldly pressures will eventually pay off, if we “faint not.”
