May 20 Scripture Selection: Nehemiah 10-13
Food for Thought: Neh. 12:8-9, 27, 31-43
What joy to see the completed construction of the wall around Jerusalem after having faced every kind of hardship! What a glorious day it was to finally gather everyone together to dedicate the wall of Jerusalem and initiate the duties of the Levites and priests! In this day of thanksgiving, steps were taken so that their offerings expressing their deepest gratitude would be at the center of all the festivities. There were people assigned to lead the thanksgiving psalms accompanied by musicians playing a wide variety of instruments, and even two large choirs were assembled to stroll in opposite directions as they sang songs giving thanks around the entire wall which then led to continued worship in the house of God. Much effort was put into rejoicing and giving thanks to the Lord.
Notably, in Nehemiah 12:43, it says, “that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy; the women and the children also rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard afar off.” What a great day it was for the people in Jerusalem! And what a great day it is for us! We could never thank the Lord enough for the price He paid for us in sacrificing the life of His Son so that we would have life (John 3:16; Rom. 8:32). And beyond that, we have great reason to thank the God our our salvation because He daily pours out on us His blessings (Ps. 68:19). Even when we are unaware, we are the beneficiaries of so many good things.
We have much for which to demonstrate our gratitude as a regular part of our life-style. And as we are thankful and full of joy, others will take notice, providing for our best testimony as we give an answer and a reason for our great joy. Let’s make today Thanksgiving Day!
