May 4 Scripture Selection: II Chronicles 1-3
Food for Thought: II Chron. 3:17
Sometimes we read past things in the Bible and do not gain the entire impact and revelation of them. II Chronicles 3:17 is probably one such example.
Notice the choice of names for the pillars before the temple: Solomon called the one on the right Jachin and the one on the left Boaz. Though these were names of prominent people from the history of Israel, their meanings are even more notable. Jachin means “He shall establish,” and Boaz means “In it is strength,” both of which point to the Lord and the strength found in His presence and worshiping Him. Every time people even looked toward the temple, or walked past the columns, perhaps touching them as they went by, they would see the columns, and maybe even call them by name, and in so doing, make a profession of faith. Those columns were constant reminders of that which held up and sustained their faith.
For us today, we also have columns that uphold our faith within us. And as we approach the throne of God within us, we can remind ourselves of the firm, strong columns that promise that the Lord shall establish His kingdom and His will in us and testify of the strength of the Lord within us. These columns are firm and unwavering, built by faith in the Word of God, assuring us that they will never fall (See Ps. 46).
Thank God for the names chosen for the columns of the temple! And thank God even more for the name of Jesus that is a perpetual testimony of God’s plan that He established, His strength, and the Church He built with that powerful name (Mat. 16:18).
