But, What Did Ben Franklin Have To Say About The Events At Garland, Texas?

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

When I read blathering idiocy of people critical of the “draw Mohammed” contest, I can’t help but think about what Ben Franklin had to say.

Here’s some more about this from Ben …..

Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruins.

So, let’s call this for what it is.

Anyone critical of the contest is either too cowardly to be worthy of said liberty, or, simply, supports tyranny.

One can easily disagree with the specifics of the contest and say people hadn’t ought to be engaged in such behavior.  However, if one can’t see the greater notion and the greater lesson behind the contest, then, they’ve no business enjoying what few liberties we have.

This brings me to another one of our great forefathers, Sam Adams ……

The truth is, all might be free if they valued freedom, and defended it as they ought.

Today, it is clear liberty is clearly under attack.  And, it is being attacked on all sides.  Daily, our legislatures strip liberties and freedoms from us.  Daily, lawsuits are filed and warped judicial interpretations strip our liberties, and now, we see people, in our very nations, who would wantonly murder people for exercising our freedoms.  If you don’t defend freedom, then you’re paving the way for tyranny.

The lunatics have demonstrated there are no depths of depravity which are too low for them.  People, we have a choice to make, and it must be made now.  For me, the path is clear.  Indeed, while I don’t have $10,000 laying around for such an endeavor, I would fully support and donate to another contest, and hopefully make it a monthly event.  I would also volunteer for hosting said event, upon finding someplace suitable.  In my mind, I can think of many suitable venues in my near area.

If you allow people to dictate to you what you can and cannot do, then, you are their servants.  And, this is why I believe the winning art work was 100% appropriate!

But, just so we’re clear, and still dwelling on Sam Adams ……

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom — go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

Lastly, I’ve got to give props to a profession which has been under a lot of criticism as of late.  You know what this picture says to me?

Them’s some boys that said, yeh, come get some!

And, the one police officer who shot the two lunatics (I don’t believe he’s pictured) …..  congress better invent an award for him!

I think this is a bit understated ….

As the gunmen got out of their car with their weapons, one police officer – a tenured traffic cop – shot both men dead, Garland Police officer Joe Harn said at a press conference on Monday. The officer used his service pistol to shoot the men, who were carrying assault weapons.

‘With what he was faced with and his reaction and his shooting with a pistol, he did a good job,’ Harn said of the officer.

‘He did what he was trained to do, and under the fire that he was put under, he did a very good job and probably saved lives. We think their strategy was to get into the events center and they were not able to get past that outer perimeter.’

But, more than that, what that officer did was that he put two cur dogs down, who would try to impose tyranny on the millions of us.

You can get more information about the event here.

I support Pam’s right to free speech, but I think her time and resources would be better spent relating an actual message, like this…

My only complaint is that the cartoon does not tell anyone of the horrors of fundamental Islam. I would have been even less PC than Pam, and I would have educated Americans on a real issue.

    • suyts says:

I think the two lunatics delivered Pam’s message. I think there was no better way to show the US what those lunatics were about than what Pam did and how the two lunatics responded, with the support of many other lunatics.

Your pic is righteous, but, nothing brings it home better than two lunatics with AK’s trying to murder innocent people.

This is what we’re up against.

      • gator69 says:

She could have had the same result, and actually delivered two messages, both of them broadcast around the world.

I was taught to do unto others as I would have done to me. The cartoon and the urine Crucifix are both wrong, as they do not convey a message, and are only there to incite a reaction.

        • leftinflagstaff says:

I think the message in support of free speech couldn’t be more clear, in either image.

        • gator69 says:

We already have free speech where cartoons are involved. How about free speech in the arena of “hate speech”? That would be bold, and worth getting someone shot.

        • leftinflagstaff says:

Again, showing you’ll stand against violence for the rights we have isn’t trivial. It is a stand against the true hate speech- that speech that shows up with AK47s.

        • gator69 says:

Again, you are missing the point I am making.

        • leftinflagstaff says:

Billions of people would call both those images ‘hate speech’.. Looks the artists are on your side in that arena. Or, what is your point?

        • gator69 says:

My point is that we have someting called “hate speech”.

Hate speech is, outside the law, speech that attacks a person or group on the basis of attributes such as gender, ethnic origin, religion, race, disability, or sexual orientation.

Is that freedom? If my religion taught intolerance and murder, I would hope that I would not have a problem being told that. I would hope that I would find a new religion. Truth is not hate.

        • leftinflagstaff says:

          Of course.

Like I said, the choice to be violent is the true hate speech. But we shouldn’t ignore the battles while fighting the war.

        • gator69 says:

          You still don’t get it.

        • suyts says:

Gator, I always enjoy your comments and insight. But, allow me to point something out, here.

          You said …

The cartoon and the urine Crucifix are both wrong, as they do not convey a message, and are only there to incite a reaction.

Towards the urine Crucifix, I agree. But, the winning artwork, does, indeed, convey a message, it’s on the picture in words.

          Someone demands ….

          “You can’t draw me!”

          The artist responds …..

          “That’s why I draw you.”

It wasn’t the artist who incited …..

FWIW, I’m 100% agreement with the idiocy we call “hate speech”. But, maybe Pam will get to that after the smoke clears on this one!

        • gator69 says:

Hey James! Thanks for at least understanding what I am saying. We already know that Muhammad cartoons incite murder, we have seen this many times. We know that Islam is a cult of death, but are not allowed to say so.

If we are not allowed to speak the truth, we will never fix the problems with which we are facing. Whether it is in Ferguson, Baltimore, or Libya.

Adult conversations are what we need.

        • leftinflagstaff says:

I get your stand against Islam, Gator. And I agree with it. But believing you’re going to change their thinking, is not an adult conversation. Making it clear their not going to change your thinking, despite their violence, is.

        • gator69 says:

I am not trying to change their minds.

        • Latitude says:

you know….when I need to catch a rat
….I put cheese in the trap

I think it’s time to thin the herd.

        • gator69 says:

They are breeding faster than your “traps” can manage.

        • leftinflagstaff says:

Theirs one those bad theirs in their. :$

  2. DirkH says:

“‘With what he was faced with and his reaction and his shooting with a pistol, he did a good job,’ Harn said of the officer. ”

Well some bosses just are like that. What he did was a fantastic, outstanding, fabulous job! (Not that one can hit a barn with an AK-47 but still!)

    • gator69 says:

The man deserves a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award bestowed by the President of the United States and is—along with the comparable Congressional Gold Medal, bestowed by an act of U.S. Congress—the highest civilian award of the United States. It recognizes those individuals who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors”. The award is not limited to U.S. citizens and, while it is a civilian award, it can also be awarded to military personnel and worn on the uniform.
