April 20 Scripture Selection: II Kings 13-15

Food for Thought: II Kings 13:22, 23

Remember the old hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”? Sometimes it is a good idea to just recall the faithfulness of God and spend time meditating on it, singing about it, and thanking Him for it. In so doing, our faith in Him is elevated, and our expectations rise.

All through the Scriptures we see demonstrations of God’s faithfulness, even when His people fail Him. He will never forget His covenant, and because of it, His compassions will not fail. Psalm 89:33, 34 expresses this in the Lord’s own words: “Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not utterly take from him, nor allow My faithfulness to fail. My covenant I will not break, nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.” Further, Lamentations 3:22, 23 affirms, “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” His Word specifically promises that God will show His faithfulness and be compassionate to us. Psalm 86:15 declares, “But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.” And in Psalm 119:90 we have His promise that His faithfulness endures to all generations, lest anyone think that it expired when the accounts of the Bible ended.

If the Lord can be faithful through the generations shown in the Bible, we can be very assured that He will be faithful to us. And His faithfulness is not reliant on our faithfulness (as seen in today’s scripture selection), but on His faithfulness to His own Word. What a relief! We don’t have to be perfect, nor do we have to earn it. We just need to receive it. Over and over, the Lord has shown Himself to be faithful, and we can trust that He will continue to be in our lives in every situation.
