As the graph above notes, sea level rise has been going on for thousands of years. There’s nothing new, nor novel about the sea level rising.
Coastal American cities are sinking into saturated new realities, new analysis has confirmed. Sea level rise has given a boost to high tides, which are regularly overtopping streets, floorboards and other low-lying areas that had long existed in relatively dehydrated harmony with nearby waterfronts. The trend is projected to worsen sharply in the coming years……..
….. “The shock for us was that tidal flooding could become the new normal in the next 15 years; we didn’t think it would be so soon,” said Melanie Fitzpatrick, one of three researchers at the nonprofit who analyzed tide gauge data and sea level projections, producing soused prognoses for scores of coastal Americans. “If you live on a coast and haven’t seen coastal flooding yet, just give it a few years. You will.” ……
…. The researchers used intermediate-to-high sea level rise projections from the recent National Climate Assessment to guide their predictions for future coastal flooding rates.
Yep, the new realities!!!!
In HuffPo world, a “reality” is when a group of lunatics declare a projection, based upon an unrealistic projection scenario posited by another/same group of lunatics.
As long time readers would know, we’ve looked into this extensively. There is no evidence SLR is worsening. Indeed, several cases could be made to state the SLR is abating. See Beenstock et. al (pdf).
But, we don’t have to look any further than suyts. As stated, we’ve done extensive research on this question. In one of the many, Hank did an investigation of Beenstock. For those unfamiliar, these are concerning the above mentioned tidal gauges. As Beenstock mentions, all studies of tidal gauges come from PSMSL.
Here’s what Hank found. You can read about his methods and whatnot at the link above. Or, if you’re so inclined, you can do your own study at the PSMSL link.
So, the tidal gauges show a decreasing trend in SLR.
That said, because there’s nothing new about our sea levels rising, and it will continue until the next ice age, any idiot can see encroachment to our coastal cities. This has nothing to do with any imaginary global warming, climate change, or CO2 in the atmosphere. It has much to do with the natural cycles which are well known and documented of the earth.
Of course, though, with the rate of the rise, even at 2 mm/yr, one would hope humans could be smart enough to get out of the way. I think we can. We used to be smart enough. But, with people like the UCS and HuffPo, one never knows.
