The point of this post, in part, is to tell people you don’t have to.  Most of the crap the people tell you, you need to do this and/or that to be “healthy” is entirely wrong.  In fact, “healthy” as commonly held is entirely wrong.

 

Did you guess how old the guy is?  Yes, if you look at the pic on the right, you can see a little flab hanging out. 

The man in the picture is 50 years old, give or take a couple of days.  No, he didn’t work out before the pics.  In fact, he never works out.  He doesn’t lift weights, he doesn’t do exercises.  He just goes about what he does, which, isn’t much.  He doesn’t jog, or run, anymore.  It’s probably been 15 years since he last ran a mile.  But, there was a time when he brought  some cigarettes to smoke while he ran 4 miles.  It took him less than 40 minutes to do so while he smoked 3 cigs.  Why?  Because he could.  Well, he couldn’t smoke a cig on the last mile.  But, that was some 25-30 years ago. 

Readers may have already guessed, I’m writing about myself. 

I have an uncle, my last one, who used to do a back-flip on his birthdays.  I think he stopped when he started to approach 70.  While I think I could, I’ve a blown disc in my back, so, I don’t think it would be prudent.  Yes, this is a bit of vanity, but, I thought, ‘why not put it to good use?’

Here’s my secret!!!! ……..  I don’t have one.  To be sure, I would never seriously recommend my eating/smoking/drinking/exercise habits to anyone.  I eat everything we’re told is bad for us.  I smoke two packs a day.  I drink like a fish(beer) and I don’t exercise at all. 

Many who do things like, try to eat right, and exercise, and abstain may be a bit skeptical.  But, I am what I am. 

The thing is, everyone is different.  And, each person is different through time.  I don’t know why my blood pressure is that of a 20 y/o at peace.  It just is.  As is my pulse, and my sugars, and cholesterol etc …. etc…… it just is. 

Of course, this doesn’t mean I hold a license for tomorrow, no one does.  I may drop dead tomorrow.  And, if I do, people will say one or two things ….. ‘but, he looked so healthy!!!’, or ‘well, you know he smoked and drank’.  Well, I eat ice-cream, too!

So, if some of us get pleasantly plump in our later years, so what?  They may live to a much riper age than I will.  One doesn’t love nor isn’t loved any more or less if one is jogging around and eating tofu than the one who isn’t. 

I believe many people, fine people, have become focused on things they should not focus on.  Rather than live their lives, they choose to narrow in on things which leaves no legacy.  So, a guy dies when he’s 75 or so.  What are people going to say?  “Well, he jogged up until he was 60!!!”  Or, “he watched what he ate until the day he died!!!”  What difference does any of that make?  What makes a difference is if you made a difference.  50 y/o or 100 y/o, what difference did you make if you were occupied by what you were doing for exercise or what you’re eating?

Time is a son-of-a-bitch.  And, it’s precious.  It is much, much too precious to be wasted on some fad diet or exercise regime which robs you of time and money. 

If I had a secret, it would be this.  Listen, don’t chase.  Don’t chase any fad, it’s a waste of time, which again, is too precious.  Listen to your body.  Mine tells me what I need.  I get cravings for things which I may or may not typically eat. Usually, when I get such cravings, I’m feeling off, a bit.  I eat or drink the craving and then, I’m right as rain. 

Sure, stretch your legs from time to time and work up a good lather.  It’s good for you and it feels good.  By that, I mean, do something from time to time which gets your heart beating and your skin sweating.  Get your lungs working.  You don’t have to do it on any schedule other than what your body is telling  you.  But, more important is that you live life.  Embrace the short time we all have here.  Our life is a gift from God.  You can live it, or squander it.  I know this, because I’ve squandered a good bit of mine. 

Don’t chase the diets, don’t waste your time working out.  Do what you’re body is telling you, and take the time you saved to live and love.  …… Laughing, along the way, doesn’t hurt, either. 

Addendum!!!!  I meant to add this, but, forgot for a moment!

    Agreed about the exercise. Diet, well you gotta eat something; I consider the eggs and bacon I had today my diet. I think you’re maintaining your weight by smoking; I stopped 10 years ago; I maintain mine by a fat and protein rich and carbohydrate poor diet. We’re the same age and about the same figure it seems. Smoking accelerates the metabolism, reduces appetite.

      It certainly does, however, I find myself eating constantly, lately. But, that may be because winter is approaching.
      The point is, Dirk, what works for you may not work for another. I’ve seen it much too often. Someone who looks fit, and people come to them and ask what they do. They tell them and people try to replicate it and it ends in failure.
      When people get to our age, it become less about the weight we’re carrying and more about how one went about carrying the weight.

    This reminds me of a joke. They were interviewing an elderly gentleman that had recently attained the grand old age of 100 years. When asked how he accounted for living so long, he said, “I don’t drink, smoke, and I eat right. I also exercise everyday, etc. Then there came this horrible noise from the back of the house. The interviewer said, ‘What’s that noise?” The elderly man replied, “Oh, that’s just dad–coming home drunk again.”
