What Are They Going To Do? Stamp Your Lunch Ticket With “No Dessert”? —- In Vermont They Did!!!

Sometimes, as a young person there were certain situations where a person asks, “what are they going to do?” “Stamp your lunch ticket with “no dessert” on it?  When I went to school, everyone had lunch tickets or cards and whatnot for the school lunch.  The situations would be that you were going to do something which was discouraged by the rules, but, no real consequences were laid out by the rules, or, you were already suffering the max punishment for violating some rule, or another, and so the saying came to be.

Townhall has this ….

Nanny State: Vermont Bans Desserts in School

In what may be the ultimate Nanny State move, Vermont has outlawed consuming or bringing brownies, cakes, or cookies to school. The mandates are part of a new program titled “Smart-Snacks-in-Schools” and will apply to lunch items, vending machines, and fundraising events between midnight and half and hour afterschool.

Boston.com reported:

“These changes are really supporting the types of diets that we as a country should be following to have a healthy diet and lifestyle,” said Laurie Colgan, child nutrition program director at the Agency of Education, in an interview with the Vermont Watchdog.

This healthy lifestyle has already been instated within the school.

“The new school lunch pattern has low-fat, leaner proteins, greater variety, and larger portions of fruit and vegetables,” Colgan said. Additionally, “the grains have to be 100 percent whole-grain rich.”

Colgan said this does not have to mean an end for fundraising. Rather, she is encouraging schools to turn fundraising away from schools, and focus on non-food items such as flower bulbs, cards, and wrapping paper.

So what do you bring to celebrate your birthday with your classmates? Shelley Mathias, principal of Edmunds Elementary School in Burlington, suggested fruit shish kebabs.

Mathias also confided to the Vermont Watchdog that she has never seen desserts served at her school in the four years she has been there:

“The kids like kale here, and they eat broccoli.”

Really? Now there is certainly nothing wrong with encouraging healthy habits at school, but to forbid children to eat desserts is taking supervision to the extreme. This is just another Big Government power grab where laws replace individual responsibility.

Well, this is related to a post I have in mind for the near future.  In fact, this might screw up the effect of the post, but, it’s crap like this which really pisses me off.

First and foremost, to get this out of the way, I don’t believe anyone has a fricking clue as to what we are and aren’t suppose to be eating.  It varies for everyone!  There isn’t a particular diet in the world which fits anyone other than the person who came up with it, and even that isn’t credible, at times.  And, when I say this, this includes crap nutritionists, doctors, health nuts, and anyone else who claims knowledge of such things.  They’re FOS.

I weigh the same as I did two years after I got out of high school …. 19 or 20 y/o.  I’m 50, or will be soon.  I’m 5’8”, and come in at 150 lbs.  I don’t work out, run, jog, or walk.  Oh, yeh, and I’m not that flabby.  My pulse is usually fine, unless I read some idiotic crap like the above, and my blood pressure, as of the last reading a month ago, is 108/68.

My diet?  Yeh, I eat what I want, when I want, and how I want it.  I love a good steak.  Bacon is the bomb!  And, that flat bread bs irks the crap out of me!  A sandwich is some meat placed between two nice a full pieces of bread!  Did I mention bacon is the bomb?  Especially, when it’s fried in with a nice mess of potatoes!  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t only eat potatoes fried, I like them mashed, too, with a good gravy and butter!  And, I liked baked potatoes, especially if there’s an abundance of sour cream to put on it!

I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, but, I do enjoy a big bowl of ice cream from time to time, with the Hershey’s chocolate syrup, of course.  But, I will take sugar with my coffee, and cigarettes.  Sometimes, on cool nights, I’ll take my coffee with some Irish crème.  But, that’s usually, but, not always all, I’ll do with the liquor.  You see, I’m a beer drinker.  I drink, not every day, but, most days.  No, not one or two, that would just piss me off.  I drink about 9-12 beers a night, sometimes more, sometimes, not at all.  Did I mention I smoke?  Two packs a day.

My cholesterol, as of the reading in the health fair my job provided, which told me my b/p, is within normal limits and my HGB A1C …. a diabetes marker is well within normal limits.

This isn’t to say I won’t kick off tomorrow, or tonight, but, as far as I can see, all of the targets presented by the health community say I’m good to go.  But, I do everything wrong according to the people who believe they know the way to good health, so much so, they would mandate what parents can send with their children to school.

Yeh, that’s the way to do it.  I would never presume to advocate my lifestyle, as far as eating, drinking, smoking, and exercise goes.  And, I certainly would never presume I could or should mandate it for others.  And, that would be the party of my lifestyle I would advocate for others.  Wouldn’t it be grand if everyone what that way?

The problem with kids being obese is not their diet. Childhood is the one time in life you can eat like a pig and NOT worry about it.

But do not tell the vindictive adults. They are jealous of that, so they scream at the rooster for raising the sun.

  2. The worst thing a person can eat is ‘grains’ 2nd worst thing is whole grains.
I eat bacon three times a day
They are banning Bacon in Burlington.

    ‘It varies for everyone!’

Yep. It’s not so much what. It’s how much, and how much you burn off. And much better for you than a super-sized mouthful of government overreach.

James, your fat rich diet and your weight and age are like mine. If I feel like wanting to lose weight I cut back on the carbohydrates, never on the fat and protein. Tending to a paleo or Atkins style diet.

Michelle Obama’s starvation diet will lead to stunted development in kids.
Food pyramid style carbohydrate diets lead to obesity epidemic.

I must call Obama’s diet a starvation diet. My kid needed tons of energy rich food while growing up. He must consist of 99% french fries by now.
What’s the result? He’s 21, lean, 6 foot tall, and does 100km (70miles) on the bike on a free day, which he doesn’t consider a long tour.

Kids are attracted magnetically to French Fries due to their energy content.

Exactly right. Children need food which gives them energy. The “adults” whine and complain children only want to sit in front of a video game all day. That’s part of it, but, another part of it is that they’re not fed properly to have the proper energy to go outside and play.

I thought it was because they tasted so good (french fries)! 😉

Back in the early 80s, we had a weight loss competition. Teams of 6 competed against each other to see which team could lose the most weight. My diet then was simple. I cut out carbs. I ate a lot of greens and meat. No breads, pastas, grains or potatoes. Our team won.

That was before Atkins came out with his diet.

Amen. Diets were ‘unhealthy’ prior to the late 19th/early 20th Centuries when vitamin (vital amine) deficiency diseases were categorized and the specific nutrient isolated. Since then, the only ‘unhealthy’ diet is the one that makes *you* sick.

There is also conflation/confounding due to the diseases of long life. Survivor bias plagues every kind of medical study (yes the double-blind ones suffer from this, too; because blinding must be broken if too many or too few survive during the study period).

Oh, yeah, each person has a personal body fat setting. You’ll get sick and die if you get too far away from it on either side, just like it is with blood pH, Na, K, Cl, PO4, Mg, Ca, etc.

Here is my prediction. The progressives will ban students leaving school grounds during school hours.

It will be the only way to stop the frustrated kids going and buying Maccas at lunchtime.
