September 6 Scripture Selection: John 11:1-27

Food for Thought: John 11:3-6, 11-15, 22

Always seek the glory of God in every situation, regardless of what it looks like at the time. The condition of Jesus’ friend Lazarus looked very serious, yet Jesus tarried two more days before even discussing going to him. But Jesus had a plan, a plan that would both bring glory to the Father and Himself and also show His disciples that Jesus not only could heal the sick, but also raise the dead because He is the Resurrection and the Life.

The Bible tells us that He loved Lazarus and his sisters. They had a close, special relationship. Yet Jesus did not drop everything and come running when they called for Him. He was confident that everything would work out fine, and He needed people to see for themselves the resurrection of Lazarus from the dead so that they would one day also believe that He, too, was raised from the dead.

God’s timing is perfect. He just asks us to trust Him, as Martha hinted that she did when she said, “But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You (vs. 22).” Though the situation may seem desperate or even impossible, the Lord still has time to come to the rescue and turn things around. This passage is evidence that it is never too late for the Him. Just wait and see the glory of the Lord.

Psalm 27:14 encourages us to wait patiently and trust Him with faith: “Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!” Further encouragement is found in Isaiah 40:31 “But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” Finally, we are reassured by Jesus Himself in John 14:13, 14: “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”

Whatever the situation may be today, our hope is still the same for us, and our instructions as believers are the same, as well. And you know what else is the same? THE RESULTS.

  1. Bruce of Newcastle says:

I really should wait for the next one, but its Sunday here in Oz. That’s my excuse anyway. The best bit in the story of Lazarus, IMO, is Martha (v39):

“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”

Practical lady, Martha. She went on with the food preparations when Mary took herself off to see Jesus. And when Lazarus had been dead four days she said what she thought. Its little things like this I treasure. Mary was especially loved by Jesus, but her sister Martha was a fine lady too.

  2. Thank you. I like this song for the lyric that says,
“she’s patiently waiting for Jesus to come”
