September 2 Scripture Selection: John 9:1-17

Food for Thought: John 9:1-5

“I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world (vs. 4, 5).” This is Jesus’ mission statement and should be ours, as well. For the Lord, He had only one thing in mind while He walked on this earth: be light so that the works of the Father be made manifest. Jesus was so focused on His mission that He paid no attention whatsoever to what day it was. Nothing was more important to Him than to be light and do the will of the Father.

Jesus said as long as He was in the world that He was the light of the world. He still is here, only now He dwells in the Church whom He called the light of the world, as well. In Matthew 5:14-16 we are told, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” It’s the very same mission that Jesus had when He walked on the earth! And He even told us how to let our light shine: through good works, the same works that the Lord Jesus did and and even greater ones (John 14:12).

Jesus mentions that there is a window of opportunity for Him to fulfill His mission, “while it is still day.” There will come a time when it is dark, and the light will no longer shine. That sounds like when the Church is no longer around. While the Church is here, it is still day, and the light still shines. But soon it will get very dark, and He will no longer be able to perform those great works through us, so now is the time to do the Father’s will and His works in the lives of all we encounter. Time is running out.

Alfred, I am finally able to listen to this (the weather was blocking the signal, or something). I can’t get over the little guy on the far right. How cute!
