June 4 Scripture Selection: Romans 13

Food for Thought: Rom. 13:11, 12

“…it is HIGH TIME to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed…” So many believers have been lulled to sleep and are not even aware of it. They just mindlessly (actually, without walking in the spirit) wander through life with no sense of purpose and no active faith. They seek only that which would comfort them, as if they desired to cuddle up in a soft bed with fluffy pillows and a warm blanket and wait out their time here on earth. All the while, they are missing the wonderful, adventurous opportunities the Lord has for them to represent Him and occupy more and more territory for the Kingdom of God.

In the history of the United States as well as that of other countries, there have been mighty great awakenings that literally woke up the slumbering believers and completely transformed society. When they awoke, people came to Christ in droves and everything, including public policy, changed. It all began with prayer and agreement in faith by a handful of believers who were awake.

If it was “high time to awake” back when Paul wrote this, how much more so today! Let’s begin or continue to stir ourselves and others to “cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light” because “the night if far spent and the day is at hand.” There is no time to waste. Jesus is coming soon, and He desires to find us occupying until He returns (Luke 19:13) because we love Him and love His purpose: to rescue the perishing and edify the Church. None of that can be accomplished with sleeping people.

This is one of the passages which I feel compelled to make a point … Here, we see this …

Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

Many people misinterpret this passage when trying to apply this notion to today. God is, indeed, the highest power on earth and in heaven. And, God does place people in authority according to His will and plan. I know, and am convinced He did so to spring forth nations such as the United States. Nations such as the United States have developed a constitutional republican form of democracy. That is to say, in these nations, the people are the higher powers, not the people we elect to be our servants. In nations such as these, it is our responsibility to govern according to the will of God.

“…it is HIGH TIME to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed…”

It is our onus to govern properly. It’s on us! It’s HIGH TIME we grab the mantle of governance back from those who wish to be our rulers. GOD GAVE US THIS OPPORTUNITY!!!! We need to stop failing Him.
