April 28 Scripture Selection: Mark 5:21-43
Food for Thought: Mark5:26-29
It was not a small thing the woman with the issue of blood did when she mingled with the crowd and stretched out her hand to touch the hem of the garment of the Lord. According to the Law, everything and every person she touched was unclean because of her condition (Lev. 15:25-27) and required certain religious procedures to remove the impurity. Interestingly, when she touched Jesus, instead of the impurity passing to Him, virtue flowed to her and she was made whole.
It was a great risk that she took, but after so many years of suffering, she figured she had nothing to lose and everything to gain. So she went for it. This reminds me of the story found in II Kings 7:3-7 about the four lepers outside the wall of Jerusalem who started thinking. They realized that they were near starvation and couldn’t go within the city because they would be killed (And besides, the ones within the city were also starving). They couldn’t stay where they were, because that meant certain death, too. So it occurred to them that they had nothing to lose if they went to the Syrian camp and see if they would take them in. That decision really paid off for them. When they found the camp abandoned, they ate to their fill and were able also to save the entire city of Jerusalem from starvation, as well. They became heroes just by taking a chance.
Some reading today’s devotional are in a similar situation. They have tried to make it on their own and the results have been lousy, or their health is not good, or they face some other kind of adversity. But if they extend their hand, reach out to Jesus, no looking back, putting it all on the line, something very good will happen. It sure is better than just staying in the same misery. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Though it will require faith and determination, it will be worth it all.
