I should be more careful, both you and James have cautioned me to not overgeneralise regarding the Neocons….there are factions within the empire. The Neocons are just the most militant conglomerate. As in this case though, it is often the Neocon faction pushing the last extra step towards conflict when other factions have settled for negotiated advantage.

When Georgia tried to retake both at different times they were repulsed by the locals and by Russian regulars.

I think Putin is an unprincipled utter bastard. But if the eastern Ukranians want to be part of Russia they should be able to be (if they are crazy enough). But this is not the way to do it. The peaceful Czechoslovakian division and the possible UK breakup are the way to do it, not this jackboot method.
They split and are two different countries now.

That actually is a non-story for anyone who has taken Economics. Businesses do not pay taxes. They pass them onto the customers. Indeed, customers pay ALL the costs of business (or the business does not stay in business).
