Study: Global Warming Will Cause 180,000 More Rapes by 2099

Global warming isn’t just going to melt the Arctic and flood our cities—it’s also going to make Americans more likely to kill each other.

That’s the conclusion of a controversial new study that uses historic crime and temperature data to show that hotter weather leads to more murders, more rapes, more robberies, more assaults, and more property crimes.

“Looking at the past, we see a strong relationship between temperature and crime,” says study author Matthew Ranson, an economist with the policy consulting firm Abt Associates. “We think that is likely to continue in the future.”

Just how much more crime can we expect? Using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s warming projections, Ranson calculated that from 2010 to 2099, climate change will “cause” an additional “22,000 murders, 180,000 cases of rape, 1.2 million aggravated assaults, 2.3 million simple assaults, 260,000 robberies, 1.3 million burglaries, 2.2 million cases of larceny, and 580,000 cases of vehicle theft” in the United States.  …..

Of course, the study is behind a paywall, so we can’t laugh at their sophistry.  But, I can point out one glaring error in this idiocy.  This paper was written specific to the US.  To my knowledge, I’ve never seen an estimate of what the US’ average temp is suppose to be in 2099.  Even if you buy into the crap about global warming, and, no one should, but, even if you did, you have to know that when people are discussion a global average, they’re not saying temps will uniformly rise.  Even their own data demonstrates this. 

Going further into this bit of sophistry, and that’s exactly what it is, yes, there’s a correlation between rising temps and crime.  But, no, that’s not how it works.  The fact is, people don’t like the cold, even criminals.  But, we’re talking going from cold to hot, not warm to warmer.  In areas where it is mostly cold, why is crime lower?  Oh, gee, IDK, could it be there’s fewer people?  Do the same study, but, instead put population distribution instead of temps and see what you get?  Oh, gee!!  The more densely populations have more crime?  Whodda thunk it?  I wonder if population density is related to average local temperatures?  What’s the crime rate in death valley?  What’s the crime rate in Fairbanks, Alaska?

OTOH, maybe they’re onto something.  Nothing like providing an excuse for a couple of scumbags, amirite?  They can claim it was the global warming wot made them dunnit!!!!
