Wow, there’s so much wrong with the thoughts expressed in this one. There’s a new study out explaining why the southern hemisphere sea ice is expanding. Obviously, it’s because of global warming.
Once again, we see the sophists are hiding behind a paywall. Here’s the abstract, my bold.
Changes in sea ice significantly modulate climate change because of its high reflective and strong insulating nature. In contrast to Arctic sea ice, sea ice surrounding Antarctica has expanded1, with record extent2 in 2010. This ice expansion has previously been attributed to dynamical atmospheric changes that induce atmospheric cooling3. Here we show that accelerated basal melting of Antarctic ice shelves is likely to have contributed significantly to sea-ice expansion. Specifically, we present observations indicating that melt water from Antarctica’s ice shelves accumulates in a cool and fresh surface layer that shields the surface ocean from the warmer deeper waters that are melting the ice shelves. Simulating these processes in a coupled climate model we find that cool and fresh surface water from ice-shelf melt indeed leads to expanding sea ice in austral autumn and winter. This powerful negative feedback counteracts Southern Hemispheric atmospheric warming. Although changes in atmospheric dynamics most likely govern regional sea-ice trends4, our analyses indicate that the overall sea-ice trend is dominated by increased ice-shelf melt. We suggest that cool sea surface temperatures around Antarctica could offset projected snowfall increases in Antarctica, with implications for estimates of future sea-level rise.
The sea ice around the Antarctic has continued in its growth.

Global warming is expanding the extent of sea ice around Antarctica in winter in a paradoxical shift caused by cold plumes of summer melt water that re-freeze fast when temperatures drop, a study showed on Sunday. ….
“Sea ice around Antarctica is increasing despite the warming global climate,” said Richard Bintanja, lead author of the study at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute.
“This is caused by melting of the ice sheets from below,” he told Reuters of the findings in the journal Nature Geoscience……
Ice is made of fresh water and, when ice shelves on the fringes of Antarctica thaw in summer because of upwellings of warming sea water, the meltwater forms a cool layer that floats on the denser, warmer salty sea water below, the study said.
In winter, the melt water readily turns to ice because it freezes at zero degrees Celsius, above sea water at -2C (28.4F).
At a winter maximum in September, ice on the sea around Antarctica covers about 19 million sq kms (7.3 million sq miles), bigger than Antarctica’s land area. It then melts away into the ocean as summer approaches.
Okay, let’s forget that this explanation is exactly the opposite for the ice-shelves in Greenland and the other ice covered islands in the Arctic. Let’s very briefly examine the science denying emphatic statement about a warming global climate.
No, it isn’t warming. Any other data set, shows the same thing within just a few years. But, that’s not the most fascinating science denying statement this idiot makes. He states there is upwellings of warming sea water. Let’s assume, for now, this is true. He says this causes melting. He also notes that freshwater is more dense than sea water. This is true, at the same temperature!!!
But, heat doesn’t understand any boundaries between fresh and sea water. Heat transfer always occurs. Indeed, that is the cause of upwellings!!! Essentially, what the authors are stating is that the heat from the upwellings will melt ice, but then, they will not melt ice.
Basically, in water there are two ways heat is transferred. In the case of the warmer water reaching the Antarctic both would be relevant.
The thermal conductivity of seawater is 0.6 W/mK at 25 °C and a salinity of 35 g/kg. The thermal conductivity decreases with increasing salinity and increases with increasing temperature.
In other words, the warmer the water, the more conductive the heat will be. If the basal melting were increased by increasingly warmer water, then we would see this reflected closer to the surface. But, that’s just conduction. There’s another dynamic in play which is related to conduction.
Convection is heat transfer by mass motion of a fluid such as air or water when the heated fluid is caused to move away from the source of heat, carrying energy with it. Convection above a hot surface occurs because hot air expands, becomes less dense, and rises (see Ideal Gas Law). Hot water is likewise less dense than cold water and rises, causing convection currents which transport energy.
- Free or natural convection: when fluid motion is caused by buoyancy forces that result from the density variations due to variations of temperature in the fluid. In the absence of an external source, when the fluid is in contact with a hot surface, its molecules separate and scatter, causing the fluid to be less dense. As a consequence, the fluid is displaced while the cooler fluid gets denser and the fluid sinks. Thus, the hotter volume transfers heat towards the cooler volume of that fluid.
Clearly, this causes more ice.
The upwellings would ensure a mixing of the fresh and sea water. As it always has done.
