Forbearing Event For This Year? Antarctic Ice On The Increase Already!!!

This is interesting and something I think is worthwhile to track.

Our friend Paul from NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT has dropped by to give us a heads up.  The ice in the Antarctic has started to increase a bit early this year.

Now, this by itself probably won’t raise a lot of eyebrows, but it should.  Last week I noted that the global sea ice area was above the 1979-2008 mean.  This was because while the Arctic was below the mean heading towards the yearly maximum, the Antarctic was notable above the mean heading towards the annual Southern Hemisphere minimum.

Now, this is notable because the Arctic ice is making up a lot of ground in it’s anomaly and hasn’t yet reached it’s annual maximum.

If you look closely at the graph above, we see that it’s past due on average.  But, as Steve recently pointed out, it’s a bit cold up there to start declining……..

I’m not sure I recall seeing this in recent years from the DMI graphic for this time of the year.  But, admittedly, I don’t get too excited about the Arctic ice taken alone.  I’m one of those who thinks humanity would be better served if the ice was gone from the Arctic.

For completeness, I’ll post the two graphs I posted last week (link above) so readers can compare……

Note the area made up in such a short time for the Arctic.

Both graphs sourced here.

The global sea ice area anomaly is notably increasing!  I’m already feeling colder.  Sad smile

Lastly, I think this is noteworthy.  Look at where the thick ice is.

Again, I’m not one that spends a lot of time on this.  But, as I recall, most of the MYI in recent years was to the east of where it is now.  That 4 and 5 meter thick ice isn’t going anywhere unless some wind and ocean currents change.  I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but in total, I think this year will see another climate meme called into question.  So, there’s a good side to being iced in.  Open-mouthed smile

Look at where the thick ice is.
woops..they’re going to need some sort of anti-cyclone to open up the NWP!

I’d actually still wager that the September Arctic minimum will be one of the three lowest on record (yes, it’s a short record). My guess would be the second lowest. Nor would I be surprised to see an ice-free Arctic in September by say, 2030. Unlike the CAGWers, I don’t think we’ll see catastrophic impacts. Nor do I think that man is entirely responsible. And of man’s contribution, I don’t think it is all from GHG emissions or even dominated by that contribution.

    Just my opinion,

Well, I don’t expect it to suddenly jump to levels seen in the 90s. I’ll have to go back and check but, I think the location of the thick ice is a bit of a nuance for recent years. Of course, I have no idea what that would mean towards a minimum. Hopefully, by 2030 we would have found something else to obsess about.

Scott, keep your eye on the pea….
Julienne kept saying “ice free” over and over….so I asked her what “ice free” meant.
She said anything the size of Egypt, would be considered ice free!
      That’s a million sq kilometers!

…for perspective, that’s Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, or 2/3 of the Gulf of Mexico!

      Scott:
We are heading for the tipping point toward the next Solar Minimum, the AMO is cooling and the AO is going toward negative. I personally do not care what the ice does at either pole, as it is mostly controlled by currents and wind patterns, rather than temperatures. Also those regions are symptoms of larger weather patterns rather than drivers of weather patterns.
Look back 60 to 70 years to see similar weather patterns in that region. We should also look back 1000 to 1200 years to see what we can expect in the near future. This modern warming period is coming to an end. Chances are we never escaped the so called LIA, as the regions around the globe did not completely recover to the temperatures that were experienced during the MWP or RWP!

Mike, these are my two favorite charts….
        ….a slow decline in temps

..and worse, what stopped temps from going up to normal, and why did they flat line?
notice, they have rapidly dropped at least 2 degrees in the past

Thanks to Number Watch, it’s been noted that we are at twenty-one years of GW lies.

    It seems like only yesterday.

We should not let people get away with misusing terms. We are in an Ice Age now (geologically). That we are living in a mild interglacial period (geologically, there’s still lots of ice, but it isn’t nearly as much as it has been in the not-so-distant past) is something to be celebrated, not panned.

Never make vast conclusions from half-vast data. Hansen and Mann, stop your misanthropy.

  5. tckev says:

I’m sorry I must have missed something but what exactly is the problem with ALL of the Arctic melting away. Surely that would restore Greenland to green and that should make the greens happy?

    • suyts says:

Ackk!!! From my post…. “I’m one of those who thinks humanity would be better served if the ice was gone from the Arctic.”

I’m all for it! I’m just pointing out the fallacies of the lunatics’ talking points.
